THanks Train. Back at ya...
Can you guys tell me if my HP MB would fit in any Case? I read on here the other day, that you need to make sure to get an adjustable MB slot. I was just wondering what I need to look for in a case for the Mother board.

Dodge and maxx, You have already paid for your pcs so guess what, use them for back up. Of course I don't know the size of your HD maxx. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Don't worry about the thread, it is here to be used. And you can't take it over because of our secret weapon who is overclocked to talk into next week. hehe

Dodge: Gotta be real careful with propietary systems such as the HP, Packard Bell, etc.. Often the mobo is designed strictly for their cases--won't fit standard cases and vice-versa. Really not sure on that HP.
Thanks Bistro. I really dont want to go back with the standard PS in that HP. It is a 100w that is way to small. The dimensions on it is 4" x 4" x 2"... I was told they normally last about a year. So I would rather get a new case so I can have my Old Cdrom and my new CDRW drive both in there. Cant with old case.
greengoose, better watch out, Max will slip his way in and take over your dreams.....lol

I HEARD THAT DODGE!!!...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Greengoose1,
Actually, this machine is going to end up becoming a network appliance after I build my "real" computer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
BTW, thanks to all the assistance, the OS question is just about solved. The only thing I need to know now is this. Should I buy the case first or wait until I have chosen the other components? Or are these cases pretty much generic. Thanks
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
The cases are fairly much the same. May need spacers or such for motherboard. But, as a whole, your motherboard and mine will fit in a case and no problems. A old recycled case can mean a lot of metal work needing to be done. I had a 486 with full case, looked it over real good, and got a InWin S500 and love it.
Dual monitors, I found a nice link I posted HERE

OK great, looks like I'm going case hunting. Also looks like the Inwin S500 is the favorite here. Financially, I am forced to go in steps, so I'll get a case and we will pick it up from there. BTW, this is going to be a "normal" computer, not like those super-powered, overclocked, and hugely modified creatures that you guys have been talking about...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'll save that for my second build. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Appreciated all the help. I'm off to the MACH2 show.....

maxx, we've heard that one before. First you will have a fine piece of machinery. Then Bistro or Train answer a couple of burning questions about how to improve it and "poof" you are an instant overclocking modding wild man. We have seen this happen. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Actually I hope it does fit for now. I want the HP back and get rid of this Emachine. THen I'll start buying what I want to build a good PC without all the extra junk in a store bought PC... But if it doesnt fit, then I could justify buying all the extra stuff to build to MY WIFE.. Just dont tell her my plans....lol

Sounds like a plan, Dodge....a sneaky plan, but a plan nontheless. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hey...for all you case modders out there....
May issue of MaximumPC magazine has a short, but decent article on case painting. Comes with color pics (was disappointed I couldn't color them...).
Hello Deltoids... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Maxx is back.
I've settled on this InWin S500 Mid-tower. I've been checking around in my area for one. So far no luck. Couple more places to look tomorrow. I have two questions:
1. Assuming I can't find one locally, what is a good on-line place to buy?
2. I'm buying this case without knowing yet whether I'll be using AMD or Intel. Is that OK? The case will handle both types of boards?
Thanks https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Deltoid?...well I guess that's better than being a Himroid. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hi Max,
Train used the same case as me and he's using AMD. I'm Intel. It's probably gonna be which Brand Motherboard you choose to go with your processor you'll be watching out for fittin' in it good.
And you won't have to put spacers under it... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I was following the instructions in the MB manual. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
It's got dimples to set it on.
bistro, did you loose your crayons again? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

**Huh? Wha'?* Oh, sorry...spacing out there...
Directron's a pretty good place--had good service. Watch the shipping costs though--need to be patient. Make sure that you get an AMD approved power supply if you decide to go with Athlon.
*Now...what did I do with those Crayolas?...*
Thanks folks. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks.....

Doggone it! Went out today and bought a cheap...er...new keyboard (Memorex MX2500) with all kinds of whoopee-dingy buttons on it. Keys are very quiet (well..quieter..). Thought this thing would improve my typing, but noooooooo....still lousy as ever. Anybody know of a keyboard that increases typing speed from oh,...say from 20 words per minute to say, 100 words a minute? Too lazy to take lessons.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Dodge,
I edited it because after I went back through the thread, I saw that the questions I had were pretty stupid. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Actually, I'm leaning towards the "laundry list" that bistro posted. Gonna do some more research on those items and see if it all fits the bill. Won't need the modem, though, with cable. Sorry, if anybody was trying to answer those questions when I edited them. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro,
Those two boards you mentioned, where one was a little more because of the chipset, what is the advantage of the more expensive one?
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
Awww Max ! Quit worrying about dumb questions. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I asked plenty. Ya might regret not askin' https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
'sides bistro may roll his eyes..but he never lets on. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Queen of Hearts,
You want dumb questions, wait until we get to the part about formatting, partitioning, and installing windows...LOL https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'm gonna blow you guys away with questions then. Want to get an idea? I don't know how to get to BIOS, what to do there, how to do it,or whether I should be in there at all. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ See what you guys are in for?
Thanks for the help. I'm going to be buying parts as funding becomes available. So it may be awhile. Trying to do this without going to the credit cards. I've got 5 of them and each one needs a serious rest period. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ OUCH $$$$$$$$$
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'll never tell.....
The 850 Intel chipset is more advanced than the BX. Supposedly Pentium chips run quite stable on them. But if you plan going on to the Pentium 4's, you'll need a mobo that supports it. IMHO, there's more hype to the P4's than substance. For example: If I've got a P3 933 overclocked to 1.03ghz, MS Word comes up in 1.5 secs. "Oh...but I want it to come up in 1 sec flat. Gotta have bragging rights you know...". Geez Louise...
(Do I sound cynical here? You bet....) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
There may be some here who will disagree, but when it comes to processors, there's a point of diminishing returns as far as speed.
The advantages become more subtle; perhaps a little more raw processing power, slightly higher benchmarks, etc., but the regular home user won't see the difference really. (Speaking of the upper end processors now).
Enough....The soap box is open... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I wish I could find the site where they found that in some programs that even the Duron 700 was beating the 1.3 P4 . Kind makes one wonder what they did to the P4 to make a dog?? [do not mean to bad mouth the dogs] of it.

I haven't heard much good about the P4 even before I started thinking about a new puter. Leaning toward the P3, although I haven't given up the idea of AMD. Could come down to money. I understand the AMD is a bigger bang for the buck. What is the downside? I don't believe in free lunches...hehe https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
HERE'S a good article from Tom's Hardware on the P4's.
Maybe a little extra care in following BIOS instructions that come with the mobo?? Other than posssibly that, I have not found any difference to sway me one way or the other except $$$. But my Duron 800 seems to run about 7 C warmer than a 866 intel. But, if I wanted to oc it , A duron will oc higher. Just I can not see any differences myself. May need new bifocals or possibly trifocals. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

One last question and I'll let you folks rest. Bistro, earlier you said I should make sure the PS is rated for Athlon in case I go that way. Is that to say if it is rated for the AMD, it will work OK with both AMD and Intel?
What I'm getting at is this. I don't know yet which way to go on processor and board, so I don't want to commit to a case that will only work with one of them and limit my options.
------------------
I crash...therefore I am.
Train,
Thanks for the links. I'll read up ahead of time to smooth things along a little better. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

maxx and the members of the advisory board. I looked at the case in question and wonder about the phrase "sufficient inner space" that dodge posted. Thoughts?
maxx as Bistro said on the high end of components what are you noticeably gaining as opposed to buying stable proven components just behind the cutting edge. I know the Queen of Hearts, bistro, and Train have power and they can also answer why, how, where they have it. If you were to build a similar system to the QoH, you would enjoy the benifits of it in your pocketbook, and performance and you would be able to put it up against the best. And fear not we would be with you every step of the way. (Is that a scary thought or not?) If you have any doubts reread the Ooperation Delta threads and you will see that not one screw, nut, bolt, was installed without intense scrutiny and instruction.
