Train,Bistro:
As far as I know, you "shouldn't" have any problems with a higher wattage power supply. The problem is usually with the physical dimentions of the unit. The 70 watt power supply I worked with was only half as wide as a "normal" unit. And it fit quite snugly into the case. You also have to look at the back of the case and see if the power connector etc. will fit into existing holes. If you like I can check with Compaq on Monday. Btw, What model Compaq are we talking about?

When I changes the ram, I to a good look inside and the ps I believe will not pull 2 hard disks, upgrade to a 500 K6-2 or some of the loads I put on the cpu. I use the engine they use to make the graphics [28 minutes to render, sure beats 3.5 days for a 486] for star wars.
Thank you, it would be a big help.

sdtech: Thanks! I suspected the mounting screw config would be different--but didn't know about the size diff--interesting.
QoH: I'd go for the one you can afford--that 833 (boxed) looks good---good prices there.
As for the vid card---you need to get an AGP-type to go with the new mobo---most of the new ones are AGP slot, but they're still producing PCI slot type. Watch carefully when choosing.

When a 486 has a bigger powersuppy physically: ???

Ok.
That's what I needed on the Video Card. I didn't know which. I knew the motherboard had one but wasn't sure what was going in it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll look at the 833 again, and at other places.

I looked again and do not see an 833. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Sorry..I'm tired...meant the 866. Now this is interesting...in benchmarking tests, that 866 outperformed the Athlon 1GHZ--interesting, huh? Also, that mobo--the chipset on it (Intel BX) has been shown to be the best mobo platform in several tests.
I think the Abit board, along with that 866 PIII would be an excellent combo.
Can I say good night now? Now where's my blankee?....

I thought this might be of interest:
Serial data transmission speeds on a PC under ideal conditions can be up to 57.3 Kbps.
Parallel data transmission speeds under ideal conditions can be up to 360 Kbps.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) data transmission speeds under ideal conditions can be up to 12 Mbps.
Ethernet data transmission speeds under ideal conditions can be up to 100 Mbps.
NOTE: These speeds are under ideal conditions. Data transmission is affected by several factors, such as network traffic, shared devices, cabling, etc.
For example
An Ethernet transmission sent to an HP JetDirect server will accept data at 10 Mbps but will only be able to transmit that data through the parallel port at 360 Kbps. As a result, data transmission rate will be only 360 Kbps. Additionally, network traffic may affect the speed of printing.
Kbps = Kilobits per second or 1 thousand bits of information transferred per second.
Mbps = Megabits per second or 1 million bits of information transferred per second
1 Mbps = 1000 Kilobits

Seems you need to get a generator. One at least big enough to pull the computer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I learned two years ago that I am on the same curcuit as the Hospital, Jail and city hall. We were out for 5 minutes the rest of the town for 3 days. Still a pain because of the traffic lights being out.
