I just picked up the new scandle sheet that I linked you to for motherboards.
And looking at some ads.
Western Digital
I will post the 20 GB
5400 RPM $115
7200 RPM $125
I do believe the 10 difference is worth it.

There are a lot of choices out there. I suggested Western Digital for budget/noise reasons. Some people are quite happy with them; others aren't. Had trouble with one about 5 years ago; but WD replaced it no problem. They've improved them since. Others are Quantum, Seagate, Fujitsu, or Maxtor. What you are looking for primarily is capacity, price, and making sure it's an ATA-66 (or 100) 7200rpm type.
Just read JT's article. Please explain the relationship between partitioning, DOS function, and a Win98 machine. I keep hearing DOS is going out. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Same here good read.

jtmurphy,
What would I gain from doing this ?
Very easy to read by the way. I could definitely follow your instructions. And pictures too ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
What do you think about the Western digital hard drive ?
Train,
great ! we are comparison shopping ! yeah !
Would you also recommend it ?
EDIT:
bistro, I see you have two Western Digitals. Even after having the problem you went with it again.hummmm That's good.
Might try to find some reviews on it and the Seagate, and then compare the price.

That's right. (That particular WD is gone now--put it in a computer I built for a friend about 2 years ago---he's still using it). Used to have 2 Maxtors--like I said before--too noisy for my tastes. Replaced them with WD ATA-66's. Have had no problem with them--quite fast. Primary has Windows and my programs; slave has the swap file and an image backup copy of the primary (Norton Ghost). If the primary crashes and cannot be fixed, it takes about an hour and a half to reformat and restore everything onto the primary from the slave drive--not too bad.
Thinking about partitioning the slave and putting the swap file on it's own partition.
Why? I dunno....somethin' to do. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
**EDIT: Gettin' real tired folks...sorry.
Think I'll hit the hay...no, really, it's real hay...couldn't afford a new mattress from all the upgrades I've done in the past 3 years... Nite all. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I already got sumpthin' ta do ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have been going over the old HP thread and the other one with the recommendations in it (giving the PB to the kids) and most of the recommendations are for either Western Digital or IBM, on the Hard drive. The IBM is quieter?
Also higher. I see that from your list Train. But that's a 30 gig, too.
You should hear this thing !

If there's anything you see that you think I am not understanding, or have been misinformed about, please tell me. It's the only way I'll learn.
Love your lights ! I wish it would snow then melt real quick before the snow plows make it ugly.
Hope HP's well.

Morning All, When one of you has a sec, please answer that relationsip question on partitioning, DOS, and a WIN 98 setup that came up after reading J T Murphy's article. The DOS part of it keeps coming up in a lot of different topics and posts.
