Black widow,
I took the card out and installed the settings as you said to do and I still cannot connect to my ISP. I get the little tv sets, but can't surf or get in my outlook express, I keep getting, cannot find server clas.net??
I didn't have to reinstall my dialup connection, could that be the problem, when I shut down, it was still in there, I went through my setup anyway, but no good!
I hope you have some answers for me??
Thank you so much!

Hello again!
Hey thanks for reminding about backing up the registry! I do that pretty often, but I didn't know how to restore it from the backup. It didn't work using the setting you gave me, kept getting parameter incorrect.
I changed my file to .reg and double clicked on it and got it to restore a previous setting.
However I still don't know what is wrong!
I did notice 3 things that changed when I got my settings back.
1-my isp dialup box popped up when I restored the registry. I have 2 one for my dell I guess and 1 for my ISP.
2-the settings under TCP/IP adapter was set on DHCP instead of disabled, but I tried them both ways when I followed your directions.
3-I uninstalled my Norton antivirus, before I restored my registry. I notice a while back my NAV kept trying to get into my POP3 box of my ISP, it was the autoprotect.
Now I know it isn't my NIC card, but I wish I could find out what it is, because I'm afraid to try it again!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thanks again for all your help, everyone that replied!!

ok first I really recommend deleteling ALL of the protocals and adapters, for networking, with all the configuration changes windows could be holding onto faulty configurations, second you should have only 1 dialup adapter (assuming you have only 1 modem) third what ISP are you using? you said they don't offer tech support, but surely they have to at least tell you what the setting are to connect. So we're going to concentrate on getting your internet back right now, so for that recommend calling your ISP and getting the needed settings, 2 after you dialup, run winipcfg from start -> run select your dialup adapter (most likely listed as PPP) and hit the more info button check to make sure you have:
1) a IP address
2) DNS server addresses
3) a Default Gateway
and for one final check hit release. all the
numbers should disapper, and then hit renew and they should all come back. if all of that works fine then go into a dos window and try to and type:
C:\windows\>ping www.yale.edu
this will hopefully give you something like this:
Pinging elsinore.cis.yale.edu [130.132.143.21] with 32 b
Reply from 130.132.143.21: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=242
Reply from 130.132.143.21: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=242
Reply from 130.132.143.21: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=242
Reply from 130.132.143.21: bytes=32 time=70ms TTL=242
Ping statistics for 130.132.143.21:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 46ms, Maximum = 70ms, Average = 52ms
Ne ways try this and post back your results, one thing to note is this is really dependant on exactly how your ISP works, and expects you to connect, they really are the best ones to inform you of where the problem is.

I've got to be gone for a couple of days, so I will have to try this later!
I've got to take my husband to hospital about 200miles from my home.
I talked to my ISP and he gave me the DNS numbers to use, what he said was they don't do free network support. So I can pay them to help me, but not too sure they know all that much about it! They are a very small ISP, near my home in Missouri, its called Clas.net.
I only have one modem, in each machine. It is a dialup 56k modem. I asked the ISP why I have 2 dialup connections and he said that is the way they do it, sooooo who could I argue with?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I just got a email from a guy that said if I use crossover cable it won't connect to the internet, is this true? What I'm using is cat5 crossover cable. A tech guy told me to get this kind?
I will be in contact with you in a couple of days!
Again thank you so much!!

I know this is a completely different approach but, if you'd like I could do it for you. Just e-mail me and I can explain it. [email protected] And no I won't charge you.

Ok Patti, we'll all be here when your ready. But as far as your ISP providing networking? support? the only thing you need them to do is get your internet connection working, we can get you through the rest, but especially with small ISPs the settings and configurations are very important. If you got your DNS address's plug them in. go to control panel -> Network -> Config Tab -> TCP/IP -> DNS config then enable DNS and add the server address and see if that works, if your still having probs, post the info from winipcfg as specified in my last post.

Ok I'm back!
I put my DNS number where you told me too. I got online and went to winipefg and when I tried to release the numbers it wouldn't do anything.
Ok under my ppp in winipefg, my DNS is XXX.XXX.XX.X it has netbios resolution uses DNS a check beside it, should I put all the information in here or not?
I will send private message or email!
Thanks for help!

Ok when I pinged www.yale.edu, everyone of them timed out, 100% loss???
I don't think my computer is going to network anything. Sometimes it just doesn't work and this is one of those times!!
Thanks again for all your help!
