JSM-1, you have given me a brilliant idea on how to get it for nothing, all I need do is look out for that dog, and exchange the CD for a nice juicy bone.
PS It never rains in England, whoops my nose just got bigger.

JSM-1; I guess I would have no choice but to go find that dog as it runs around and then snatch the CD from it's mouth. I have a close relative that is in the M$ fold, and has offered to get me a free copy of this XP thing...
I have said NO to even that at this point. It is true, I wish to be of help to as many as I can, but then again, I too have quit smoking, so I know this feeling you allude to, shall also pass for me.
I have to protest this OS as just the WRONG thing for the M$ company to do. They are becoming Big Brother by acting this way, and I will always go against the coercion.
Summon up the willpower guys,, we are the last line of defense, DO NOT FOLD AND CRUMBLE....
Do not buy XP, and cast your opinion with your WALLETS..... That is all Mr. Gates will see anyway.

Ok, enough is enough! I was stationed at Greenham-Common AB, near Newbury, one winter ("100 years" ago). I learned what protest is and how rain is truly defined" Of course, ecrosson knows something about rain, being in Seattle! Anyway, if either of you crack under the strain and buy XP, please post so I can toast you with an adult beverage and get the last laugh. Look for that dog!

I'm not a big upgrader. I waited until this summer to buy Win98 SE. I had to cause Microsoft was putting out programs that wouldn't work on Win95.
My advice on WinXP is don't buy it when it's released; it will be buggy as he**. Wait till their service pack or 2nd edition is released with updates and patches installed.

Philgo,
I've had Windows xp for a about a week and windows 98 booting on the same partition with a menu that lets me pick what I want to load. Windows xp as Default. I would recommend Windows Xp Professional. I'm saying professional because from what i've heard, Home edition has lots of Faults.
I agree with GodMonstr, LotusAstra and everyone else who gives it a thumbs up https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
The problems i've had with it are drivers for:
Creative Sound Blaster 16 ISA Slot does not PNP auto detect, so I had to config it myself including the game port. (I guess Creative won't release drivers for this till XP is out world wide)
Hewlett Packard Deskjet 400 installs with the drivers but when it comes to printing it keeps asking for the printer cartage.(Prints in win 98 just fine)
Can't get direct CD for easy cd creator to work (downloading Xp version of it as I type this)
So Philgo I say Windows XP Professional is the best Microsoft operating system ever, it's just a pitty that they decided to ditch MS-DOS. MS-DOS and printing are the only reasons i've kept Windows 98.
If HP fix my printing problems and I find a way to get DOS without needing to keep Windows 98, I'd be happy then because I could get my much needed hard drive space back https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks everyone for your input, the biggest problem I have is not how it works because I am sure that it's a little improved over ME/98, its just that WPA malarky that I'm concerned about. I just like to play too much, and I can't be doing with letting Microsoft knowing what hardware I have in my machine. I'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

So, it sounds like the general consensus is that it is the thing to buy after all.... huh...
You guys are pushovers.... I thought there would be some support on the side of not buying because of the WPA, and the fact that it is an intrusion of personal freedoms, and privacy....
WHERE IS THE SUPPORT ??????????????
-
Sorry, ecrosson, but WPA just isn't that big of a deal. Does it irk me a bit? Sure. But it's really no more than an attempt to keep honest people honest. I see both sides. But Microsoft's arguement for WPA is stronger than the arguements against it. especially since most of those whining about it don't even understand how it works. So they make up grand conspiracy theories about how Microsoft will use it to pilfer your bank accounts and brainwash your dog.
Product Activiation isn't the problem. It's the fact that so many companies now find it necessary that is the problem.

I would have to agree with OLEerror. I'm not a big fan of MS, but they do have a right to protect their products from piracy. If your bothered by it so much, download Linux.

But do they have the right to interogate our machines to see what hardware we have, I think not.

Just think of not being able to get through on the phone, when you install a few new peripherals and then you have to go to Microsoft and ask them nicely if it is alright to reinstall the OS.
-
I don't care what you guys say, WPA is bunk. I have a very good understanding of how the OS works. That is the reason I'm so up in arms about it.
I have the chance to get several free copies, and even the Corporate version, and ALL for free, so the acquisition is not an issue either. I believe it is wrong to have to ask a company for permission to use something you have purchased from them. I also think it is wrong for ANY company to tell you basically that you need to ask them if you can change your own private hardware.
To say, it is no big deal is like putting your head in the sand as far as I see it.
To say it keeps honest people honest is a crock. If you are honest, you will do so regardless of the opportunities placed in front of you.
This whole thing is so wrong. It is just one more chip away at our private, and personal freedoms. Give this small part away, and what will you say when they take the next larger part away from you, JUST GRIN, and say, Oh, it's no BIG DEAL.
Don't support it, and it can't take you away.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it....
-
I'm with you E I am not buying this O.S. I would not even install it if I could get a legal free copy.....I am totally against WPA.....M$ does not need to know what I have inside my computer. I am a tweaker and like to upgrade very often and I will not call 1-800-I-want-your-money to reactivate the product if I add more memory or change a video card.(more likely major upgrades will be the only things affected but I stil am not giving in on this until WPA goes away.

look,
XP is NOT good for you if you are using win2K for a long time and still arent bored of it.
Its a fancy frilly layer built up over the W2K and with some utilitilies (like the cd burner and the nice restore and the firewall)
and coupla nice polite messageboxes that make you think "wow, is that windows i am running or what?".
But if u are using an OS below W2K, u have GOT TO take this one very seriously.
I have the eval version and am just step away from activating it. Hey ! pssst. people tell me u dont necessarily have to buy it.. well i mean if u are using it at home only... the corporate professional edition does not require activation!!!!
good luck
God Bless

Please GUYS !!!
before u think XP can leave u high and dry during hardware issues.
XP professional CORPORATE as of date does NOT require talking to a sales agent or online activation or anything. imagine it to be XP but without that activation bull. no hardware key algo. No nags. nothing. plain full OS called XP pro corp.
just for those who did not know. sorry to the offended ones.
