OK I'm done. I had to put the packard bell keyboard outside in the sun for awhile. It won't work while dripping wet. Thats just be cause water is a conductor.
It is still damp but working flawlessly. I can't recomend this cleaning method for all
keyboards as constuction methods differ.
But if the cheapest keyboard on the planet,Packard bell can survive I don't see why others wouldn't.
My favorite keyboard, the IBM 101 can handle
full submersion w/soap and a good rinse.
I don't recomend this method for hard drives, cats or small dogs. Leave this for the pros.
If it ain't broke... I can fix that

I am glad it works mrfixer.. I see that you aren't missing any more keys.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/, and I tried my cat once.. in the shower.. It wasn't a pretty site let me tell you.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ so, dishwasher safe eh? I will try that too.. I seem to have gotten chips in between the keys.. hee hee hee

Shlomes no leg pulling here.
It seems I have way to much time on my hands.
This experiment was not scientific. I now must pour an entire cup of coffee w/sugar and cream on this keyboard that I care nothing about. Then confirm that it no longer works.
and try the dishwasher again only this time w/detergent.
All I stand to lose is a good cup of coffee.
Yes I must have to much time on my hands.

This is one thread I can't stay out of
This is hysterical and you guys are serious too... Never laughed so hard....
At least there is still some humor left....
Ciba, I have done the same thing several times, in fact the $50.00 keyboard I am using now had it happen to it, and I'm too cheap to buy another one so...
Take the whole keyboard apart, it's quite easy, just be carefull if there are any cables attached to the parts that are being separated. You will find either a circuit board of some kind and/or padding. Take these materials and use a hair dryer to dry them off - not real high heat as you could toast the circut board.
Let them lay out in the nice fresh air to cool down and relax.
Then put the sucker back together and it should work....BTW while ya have the sucker apart might as well clean the whole thing up - in the dishwasher that is (minus the circuit board)

Well I have had friends spill water, coffee, coffee-sweet, and soda onto their lap tops. The water and coffee spills were able to dry out and they saved their system. As to the coffee-sweet and soda, the sugar in them was just too much(made the liquid more conductive to electricity) and they wound up shorting out their keyboard and system.
Try out Murf's suggestion and if that does not work then throw the thing into the dishwater as you have nothing to loose at that point.
Just remember though that even if you dry it out completely you have already started the rust into attacking so you will have some more problems in a year or so.

If you realy need an "e" you can generate one
by holding down the alt key while keing in 101 in the num pad then release alt. For an upper case "E" key in 69.
I think my packard bell keyboard is almost done, Its been in the oven for almost an hour now.
-
mrfixr you crack m_ up!
Hav_ you got your packard b_ll out of th_ ov_n y_t??!!
Sorry to say that i won't b_ n__ding to g_n_rat_ that "_" though sinc_ i will hav_ a n_w k_yboard soon!
How_v_r did you g_t so wis_ conc_rning comput_rs???

By far the best way to learn about somthing is to break it, then fix it. This holds true for computer related equipment like no other.
Do NOT attempt this at home !!!
For this experiment I take one perfectly good
Packard Bell keyboard and then prepare a perfectly good cup of coffee (three Tbs sugar and cream). I feed the coffee to the keyboard.
Next I prepare the oven, preheat to 200 deg. and place the keyboard into the oven.
This is to facilitate the drying process.
(note the melting point of keyboards is well below 200 degs).
Noticing that the keyboard is begining to melt and brown a little on the edges I remove the keyboard and place it on the top rack in the dishwasher.
I then add Cascade dish detergent and set the washer to Heavy wash/pots and pans.
After the wash is complete I remove the keyboard and return it to the oven for drying
only now the oven is set below the melting point of keyboards (140 deg).
After about a half hour in the oven I return the keyboard to service. To my supprise I get a keyboard error on POST! The computer continues to load Windows. I then launch DOS.
Half the keys function, half don't. Keep in mind this is a Packard Bell keyboard and is prone to errors. None the less I assume there must still be some sugar (or should I say carmel)corrupting the electronics.
Having already put the keyboard through the most rigorious wash I decide it's time for full submersion in a tub of hot water. After two minutes of dunking and shaking it's time for the oven again.
After about a half hour I return the keyboard to service. Still some errors but as the keyboard cools (supprise)things become more normal, but still not quite right. So it's back to the oven for another hour.
The keyboard is now as dry as it's going to get and quite hot. POST still reports keyboard error, the machine reboots again more errors, BIOS serial number is corrupt.
more weird stuff, I shut down.
The keyboard has now reached room temp. and all appears well. No more error msgs. All keys function normaly, except the "o" generates a backslash if I hit it to hard.
I don't know why the "o" is malfuntioning. Somwhere along the line the matrix must have been damaged. I just can't say where. Most likly the high temp (200 degs).
Lets see what did I learn.
1) Keyboards don't like high temps.
2) A faulty keyboard can affect a system (maybe even damage it)
3) Full submersion in hot water is prefered to the dishwasher.
I suspect the keyboard will operate as such well into the future, heck I wouldn't be suprised if the "o" started behaving.
Happy Thanks Giving, and don't eat any funny looking stuffing.
If it ain't broke... I can fix that

If you really need that "e" right away you can download a small virtual keyboard from:

Mr Fixer..
I'm afraid to ask what you do to clean the heads on your vcr..<g>
I once knew a guy who decided to clean all the knobs and fader caps (hundreds of them) from a well used but very expensive sound mixing console..to facilitate drying he threw them all into a bowl inside a microwave oven on high..most of them ended up looking like they were from a Salvador Dali lansdscape. hehehe...that is indeed how you learn stuff.

Mrfixr- You must have been nominated class clown of your senior class!!! LOL
You are by far the most humorous guy on the net I say!
What do the rest of you think?
Thanks for making me laugh even when I wanted to cry!
This "E" problem has sure had some humor in it!
I looked back at my posts, and couldn't believe how funny they were, but i was so serious and wanted to try to salvage it but to no avail--Coffee is deadly i guess!
PS.
Got any ideas on how to clean my mouse???
It is due for a good cleaning and thought that with your expertise, you may have some suggestions.
