So, i contacted the program creator and had a technician help me out. He had me do all kinds of check and it still didn't fix the issue. I thought i would use a computer backup but it turns out the one i have is too old to be useful to me.
However, i am using Crash Plan, which is a live, continuous backup and i might be able to restore from an earlier date. Since i don't want to restore EVERYTHING, can you point me to what file (or folder or group of files) that might be involved in the running of windows explorer? Maybe i can restore them from an earlier point, as if it were a restore point (kind of)?
If Explorer.exe were corrupted, you would be having much, much bigger problems. Most likely the corruption is in either the Registry, or the user profile. To see if it is the user profile, try login in to Windows as a different user. Create a new user if you don't already have another one, or you can enable the hidden administrator account:

I can do that.
Also, i just hit me that i have two drives: C and E.
The E drive used to be my C, and when i wanted to upgrade my drive, instead of replacing it and copying everything, i got a separate drive that became my C while my old drive became a storage drive, for all the files and such, BUT it has Windows on it since it was used as C drive. How can I boot from the E drive to see if the problem exists "computer wide" or just "drive wide"?
You could swap the drive cables, however, that is not necessary. The old C: drive that is now the E: drive will not have been affected by this issue since you are not currently booting from it.
OK, so if i am able to get a backup of some files/folders, in order to "override" whatever might have been affected, which files/folders should i restore? Any suggestion?
We can't tell which files you might need to restore until we can determine whether the user profile is the problem or not. Check that first and report back the results.
OK not sure if it helps or now, but using a different user, i have the exact same display of "no preview available" and the images showing as icons only.
That would indicate that it is not a user profile issue.
Try this:

In Windows 7 Explorer under "Organize" select "Folder and search options" then under "FOLDER OPTIONS" click on the "VIEW" tab and unckeck if checked the first box under "Files and Folders" "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and then click "Apply" and if it works then click "Apply to Folders" answer the prompt then click "OK" and that should do it. I switched back to a Windows 7 Aero format theme and found my preview pane stopped working and that was the reason. Also it might be best to just click "Restore Defaults" then "Apply to Folders" and then modify how you like it. Hope this helps! (PS Also make sure the correct application is being selected to open/preview the file type ie .jpg the default is the "Windows Photo Viwer" but I use "Picasa Photo Viewer" just make sure it is not set to an incompatible application for the file type.)

Another possibility:

That is something i did in the first place. The issue is not only to have most images show as icons, but to have a "No preview available" showing on the right pane of windows explorer. This means that those "icons" showing up, can't display the actual image anywhere, other than if i right-click, Preview and that would open the Windows Photo viewer to see ONE image at the time.
I also noticed that if i write an email and want to attach an image, or if i want to insert an image in Word or want to upload an image while working on my WP site, i get the same issues. It is "system-wide" as i can see.
So, if i was to restore from a backup, what would i have to restore?
This always revolves around the same checkbox and setting that i have been looking at. Not working.Quote:
My guess would be that the Registry settings for Windows Explorer are not correct. You can try fixing them using the links below. If that does not fix the issue, you can try replacing Explorer.exe from a backup, but my
guess is that won't work either.

So, if the Explorer.exe itself is not THE file to restore, what other files/folder would i need to restore if i restore from a backup (instead of restoring a whole drive)?
If you want to try digging for possible Explorer.exe shell extensions, the links below may be useful. Bear in mind that each of these may have their own Registry settings that need to be fixed also.
