You can try the old drivers from the Gateway site, but they are 3 years old.

yes, it's 32-bit. bought in spring of 2009. and i agree it is bizarre (especially having nvidia check my card for an appropriate driver). i'll follow your gateway link and try there as a last resort this weekend. if it doesn't work i'm not going to worry about it since this is my home "backup" pc. maybe i'll revisit this at a later time.

you may not remember but i was the one posting in the xp forum a few weeks ago about the "missing or corrupted hal.dll" problem on my work pc's boot-up. it had symantec's go-back installed (http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...rupted-hal-dll). you or train pointed out to me that xp will be unsupported come next spring. this particular pc came with both windows xp AND windows 7 installation discs.
so, i'm going to do a fresh install of 7 on it next week and try the xp mode. there are two legacy qbasic systems that we need to retain.
so you MAY be seeing me in the windows 7 forum then.
