oh....ok, I put the xPUD cd in the CD ROM drive and booted from that cd to get to the usb. (i thought you were asking to boot directly from the usb.) so, i followed your directions, and saw the screen that the restore point had been set. turned off thecomputer and tried to re-boot. i still get the same two screens as in the begining.

Can i install XP over from the original disc, or should i download XP from the site you refered me to?
You can't download Windows XP.
My link describes repair installation using your own XP CD.

When we inserted the XP disc we get a screen with options: F1 to retry boot, F2 for set up utility. we've disabled the hard disc, etc. from the boot sequence and have only the CD ROM checked for boot sequence and we still get the same screen with the F1 and F2 options
Is CD drive listed first in BIOS boot order?
when i press F12 it gives ! Normal then 2 IDE CD-ROM
we, of course, highlite 2 and press enter
in the F2 menu "hard disc drive (not installed)" is listed as 1, but agin, wehave uncheked it form the bot sequence
You don't want to uncheck hard drive.
You have to MOVE CD drive to first position.

ok, got cd rom to move into first position and checked hard-disc drive c........now we're back to the screen of either choosing recovery console or xp home edition, then to the scren of starting normally, safe mode, flash blue scren and back again.
PS i can hear it trying to boot from cd-rom
