Which Printer to buy

I don't like consumer grade HP printers because the driver/software is garbage. Never been around any I would own. Business class HPs are different (IMO) but won't be in your price range. So if it's between Canon or HP, I'd recommend Canon.

That said, I buy Epson. Not perfect by any means but have been good for me and my family.

*Have to agree that if you can swing it, and you do a fair amount of printing, lasers are the cheapest to own/operate. But if you only print a few things, just once in a while, ink jets can be price competitive.

An example of the cost of the ink for an "ink"jet printer ...

A HP 97 Tri-color Inkjet Print Cartridge (C9363WN#140) contains "(14 ml)" of ink and costs $39.98 (USD), including shipping at Newegg.com.

Do the math:

3,785 ml (milliliter) = 1 gallon (US)

3,785 ml divided by 14 ml per cartridge means it would take 270 cartridges to get a gallon of ink.

270 cartridges times $39.98 per cartridge equals $10,794.60 per gallon.

Toner (Laser) cartridges do in fact cost more at the point of purchase than ink (Inkjet) cartridges do. However, when you look at the cost per page toner wins...big time.
So, in the short run, an inkjet is cheaper....In the long run, a laser is more cost effective.
In the long run, more money up front WILL be cheaper in the long run...
It's like stepping over dollars to pick up dimes....

I don't like Epson inkjets at all. Unless you use it a lot, they will get clogged up. The Canons used to have separate ink tanks and printhead assemblies, so the consumables can get expensive. HP got vetoed already.

That leaves something like a Lexmark.

I've seen some pretty competitively priced Brother lasers, but I can't say how they are one way or the other.

I have 2 Brother laser printers, a color printer, and a black & white MFC unit. They have worked well for me.

I would suggest going for HP printers. The best part is any IT support company is able to provide you services for them as they are very common and every company has their drivers and their staff knows how to troubleshoot them.

HP are terrible about drivers, every time a new version of Windows comes out, they expect you to buy a new scanner or printer because they won't update the drivers :mad: I found that out the hard way. Never again.

Hp can cost up to 410,00 for a gal of black ink too.
