Dude, I've heard about that infamous layout w/ the huge white space on the right but have never got it myself. Don't know how it appears on your end but it does have the "cached" and "similar" links that I need. I too don't like the silly dead space on the right but will give this layout a try.
The good thing about it is that I can get there by simply adding the "/custom" at the url. See, Google, you can do the same thing with all the other layouts you are trying out ... just give your users a choice by mean of a different url, it really is not that much to ask, then you may test all kinds of things you want and we complaint that much.
(There is another thread here talking about the missing "Search within Results" function. Thx god I don't use that feature that much.)
Yes thats the URL i just posted above for you :)Quote:

Good old basic I have used for years.

Train, on my browser, that is the same as the new layout that I stucking with ... no "cached" link.
OK, I grab the cache on the link if the link does not work after I Google what I want.
Just my way of doing things.
Googled Cass scenic Railway.
Note the cached link behind the www.cassrailroad.com url.
That is what I use if the link does not work.

That's what has been removed in the new layout :(
My main use of the cached link was where I wanted to highlight the search terms. I'm finding of late that it is a waste of time because all I get is "These terms only appear in links pointing top this page: xxx xxx". Which makes it about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard  There's a good article on that here:

Yeah, the "cached" link is no longer there for those of us whom Google forces to use the new layout.
I use the cached pages a lot not only b/c the keywords are highlighted, but also b/c for my job I do a lot of research for legacy products, technologies, etc. Often times, those info can only be found in those cached pages.
Maybe the wayback machine can help or the other sources listed can help out then.

You do not see Cached/similar links on that page i listed falcon??
This looks nice (I see cached links here also)
www.incywincy.com
No, with the default www.google.com address, I am force to use their new layout w/o the "cached" and "similar" links on this computer using IE8 (still get them using Chrome but I prefer IE).
Using the www.goole.com/custom url, I get the "cached" and "similar" links BUT I don't get the "Images", "News", "Maps", "Shopping", etc. filter links. I just can't win w/ Google
