It is still taking about 10 minutes for it to fully boot up. Woud this possibly be a memory module going bad.
It could be memory, but the hard drive would be a more likely cause. Is the hard drive light working, and, if so, does it stay on constantly or at least most of the time during the boot process?
The hd light works but it's not on constanly during boot. It just flashes fast and then just every once in a while but the system is still using at least half of the cpu for at least 10 minutes. What am I looking for in the memtest86+ results and how long should I let it run. The hd did get a passing rating in the extended wd diagnostics.
You want memtest86+ to finish at least a couple passes. Some people run it overnight to be sure. You should get ZERO errors.
Looks like I got quite a few errors but how do I tell which mem module is bad. I will run memtest overnight and see what I get.
if you have errors, test each stick one at a time.
I agree, test one stick at a time.
First test with Memtest86. If you see one or more "red" error(s), like so:stop the test and try Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. If that also fails, with a "Hardware problems were detected.", like so:the RAM is bad and needs to be replaced.
Ran memtest86+ overnight and no errors, ran memtest86 this morning and got between 22 & 24 errors on test 3 and 40-42 on test 7. I'm running windows mem diag at the moment and so far nothing. Also I tested each stick indvidually in each socket and got the same errors as above in memtest86. Could it possibly be the mob.

Time to test known good ram.
If it was mine, I would buy a pair and see if that works. If it does, throw out what you have.
It is possible that the motherboard memory controller is bad. Memory is more likely though.
Is it possible that all 4 mem sticks went bad at the same time.
Yes, a electrical spike could have gotten them and left everything else alone.
Why I suggested testing with a known good stick.
If it works in all slots, then what you have is probably shot. :(
OK thanks, I'm back to work for the next 4 days so it may be monday or tues. 12 hr days this month. I'll get a new stick of mem and give it a try. I'll let you know in a couple of days.
Well I tested a new stick of ram and same results, numerous errors. Looks like it's time to build a new computer or buy. Any suggestions guys.
