never mind...just opened it!
It does matter. It has to be utility for the specific type of hard drive.
What is the brand, and model of your latpop?
Usually to see what hard drive you have, is just a matter of removing couple of screws on the back of your laptop.
I didn't se your previous post :)
Its a toshiba HD, the laptop is a msi wind u100...Im running a utility now dont know if its the right onefrom the page u gave me, but it recognized my hd. I ran a quicktest and it completed but no data so im doing an advanced test. with a toshiba hd do you see a specific one i should use...I grabbed this one(Download Drive Fitness Test v4.14 b00 (07.16.2008) - CD Image (Direct Link)
Thanks for all the help!!
Toshiba is one of the few companies, which don't provide HD diagnostic utilities, but your best bet would be to try Hitachi, or Maxtor.
uhg...ok just ran hitachi it said problem found on non hitachi drive contact hdd manufacture. trying maxtor now....
Did it offer to cure anything?Quote:
it said problem found
no it didnt.Just said prob found non hitachi go to manufacture. It didnt look like the greatest utility there wasnt a place to list details or anything. The maxtor one is running now it looks a lot better...
OK.
well...the maxtor diagnostic failed as well and didnt offer to repair anything. I dug arount and found and old xp iso on another hd and it was able to lead me into the recovery cosole. :DYES!! I was able to change the registry software issue and boot off my HD. Could spybot have been the culprit with the original registry problem?? Whats some other good freeware I can load to keep my pc clean?? Thanks for the troubleshooting.:)
Wow! So, is your computer operable now?
Regarding Spybot, my guess, is a s good, as yours, however, most people dropped Spybot.
As of today, your best antimalware tools would be Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes.
Seagaqte reads my toshiba hdd. And should read all hdds now. They made the change when they bought the Maxtor/Quantum combo.
Ok so I did the registry fix from the page you gave me Broni, and then a chkdsk. The comp booted from the hd and still had my user profile to click on the welcome screen. None of my icons were on the desktop except the recycle bin (eh big deal). All of my programs were still in the start menu as far as I can tell. My problem is that nothing really seems to work properly. System Restore immediately closed itself, and Internet explorer did the same along with a few other programs. What Now?
Well, we're getting somewhere. At least, your computer is bootable now, and can get to Windows.
You can either back up your data, and use your Recovery CD, or you'll need Windows XP CD to run more repairs. Windows CD may be borrowed one, but it must have same Windows version, and same service pack, as installed on your computer.
Ya the win xp cd I use for the recovery console isnt the same as on the computer. So do you mean backup and reload from the recovery disc, or can I make any of the repairs using it?
