Okay, in the end I bought the e trust software for virus and spyware scanning and managed to get that working enough to remove spyware.

However, my computer is still without sound and won't show any images (though will, strangely, show that video in the ad to the right of this).

Okay, so:


1. I managed to find out how to get back desktop manager by googling

2. My sound is back as I found that I... er.... had put the sound jack in the wrong socket. So I'm an idiot. Though this may have only been recently, windows media had issues finding the soundcard and with associated problems I do believe that it was disabled anyway. Just for far less time than it would have been if I hadn't taken the plug out and put it back in the wrong slot.

3. Still getting some pop ups for virus downloads that I can't get rid of.

4. Getting a pop up asking to connect to the web as soon as I log on.

5. Still getting no images online.

It sounds like you still have malware issues. Can you generate and post a HijackThis log now?

It got worse since I last posted... my computer is now inoperable.

I did remove some things from the start menu, but nothing vital (I googled everything to make sure).

I can't load any application (it says "not found") and I can't even load "system restore" or msconfig.

Obviously I'm on another computer right now.


Help?

Can you boot into Safe Mode and run anything?

I really think that you are going to have to reinstall Windows here. This sounds far to badly infected to get clean. The maker of the PC should have given you some means of reinstalling Windows. If not, you should contact them to find out if they will supply you with a disc.

There's nothing I can do in safemode? (which I don't really know how to access... it asks me for an administrator password which I don't have/don't recall).

If I reinstall windows I take it it will wipe all my files.... my music, my word documents, everything?

This is frustrating, I just paid $60 for virus and adware systems and now it's all gone. :(

Yes it will. Which is what your backups are for. You did make backups I hope?

Well, if it's any consolation, most of us learned the hard way. I guarantee you will always back up your data after this. I think all we can do is try and at least get your PC cleaned up enough to rescue your data.

What I would suggest is that you do a Hijack This log and post it in our specialist Hijack this log forum where the guru's can tell if the PC is clean or not. Please read the forum instructions before posting.

Press F8 immediately after the BIOS messages during the boot process to get into Safe Mode. That may allow you to run HijackThis.

Sorry to be thick, but what exactly do I do after F8?

Choose "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking".

One of the options should be Safe Mode. That is the one you want to boot to. You will need to have a copy of HijackThis already on the hard drive. Run that and post the log. If you don't have HijackThis already, you could try Safe Mode with Networking to see if you can download it.
