No Ask.com isn't the default...
I think Live Search is the default. I must have inadvertantly added the Ask.com BHO at some point.
Ask.com gets on some people computers as drive-by-install, while installing some other programs.
I have the same problem with Ask.com and I downloaded Hijack and ran a scan but I can't find it in the log. Is it listed under some other obscure name?:(
Trying to solve the same problem but can't find Ask.com on the log after I run Hijack. Any suggestions?

I too had the "invisible" ask.com search engine which was mind-blowingly frustrating. i think it installed itself when my daughter downloaded fun cursors.
I found Hijack this, and other similar spyware downloads unhelpful, cumbersome, and not free as some suggest they are.
Although i think ask are underhand, devious, and i'm sure downright illegal, they did have removal covered in their FAQ, and I have now managed to get rid of it.

MAgill, I all ready run this scan, my problem its on mozilla firefox, I dont found anything that says ask browser or something like that, can u tell me wich names appeared on your computer? thanks
I'm in the same boat. FireFox will not allow me to change my homepage away from ASK.COM. I can make the change in TOOLS->OPTIONS, but when I close FireFox ASK.COM takes over, and the next time I load FireFox, ASK.COM is there once again!?!?!?Quote:
