Spy Sweeper 5.5 - free years subscription

Has anyone living in the USA been able to take advantage of the free Spy Sweeper 5.5 offer? If so how did you do it? Did you use one of the download sites mentioned in my post #14 or something else?
Since Spy Sweeper is an active (always running) antispyware program, I assume it will conflict with Windows Defender. Or is there no problem?
P.S. I understand from buf's last post that buf was able to extend the subscription period of an old Spy Sweeper installation by a year by using the "license code" in the email Spy Sweeper sent. It is not clear whether buf's version of Spy Sweeper was updated in the process.

Jim, I did not have Spy Sweeper version 5 installed at the time I applied for and received the product # in the email I received. I think I already said that my one year's update subscription had already run it's course and I chose not to renew so I just simply put the version 5 CD in my desk drawer!! No more SW then. Hope this will enlighten you further.

I interpreted that to mean you already had SS installed and that it had expired, but resurrected it by using the "license code" you got from that offer. Maybe I misunderstood.
If you downloaded the free v5.5 and then used the license code, where did you get v5.5?

You can't "wear me out" Jim :D If I recall correctly, I opened the link( http://www.webroot.com/activate ) and followed the directions to complete the form. Give your real name if you wanna or just fake it but you will want to give a valid address for them to email you the directions and the code to get the 5.5 version. I haven't had SS installed for many months now because I did not renew subscriptions for an additional year; I think I just used my old SS CD and when the part in the installation of the CD popped up, I filled in the registration code using the code SS sent to me. I think that was all because the installation then completed. Yell back if I can offer more.

OK. I never had Spysweeper installed.
I filled out the form. They sent me activation code.
I downloaded trial version, installed, but at no point, either during installation, or after, I had a chance to enter that code.
I uninstalled it.

Three programs that you will never see on any of my systems are Norton , McAfee, and Webroot Spysweeper. All 3 are resource hogs. You can do much better by using AVG, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and CCleaner. Plus they are all free.

When someone brings a computer to me complaining of slowness the first thing I look for are any of those 3. If I find any of them I immediately uninstall them. Sometimes I have to use uninstall utilities before they are completely gone. People are amazed how much increased performance comes right away without any of those three programs installed.

Right on all 3 counts ginky4. One of the big reasons why I did not keep SS when my original subscription expired. Also why I may remove the freebie. I had hoped this version 5.5 would be better. One has to click on too many screens before it begins it's work :(

Broni, you didn't get to keep the free version 5.5 made in the offer because you did not meet the criteria of either receiving the "magazine" with the SS CD in it OR you did not posses a SS CD already. See #19 post above.

buf--Thanks for your post #19. All clear now. I thought I might finally try SS with AdAware going downhill, but ginky4 has given me second thoughts.
Maybe I will just stick with Windows Defender and SpywareBlaster.
According to this article dedicated and expensive antispyware programs may no longer be so important.

doent work on vista 64 bit tho...at least the free trial from ws doesnt...will tri on other comp...vista 32..

Hear, hear ginky4! Well said and agree 100%, after the latest update, program, of Spysweeper the program ran terrible and would take forever to load. Unistalled/reinstall, still ran terrible. Rolled back to previous, ran OK...albeit slowly. Uninstalled completly and machine is happy. I think the design team from Norton jumped ship and went to work at Webroot.
