I don't know that I entirely agree about the conclusions regarding backing up to CD/DVD. For very important data I'd say that it is one of the best methods of keeping data secure, as long as the discs are stored sensibly. External hard drives are still mechanical, and tapes can get mangled, and being magnetic can easily become corrupted, or lose their data over time.
Personally I like to use a combination of backing up to internal and external drives, plus backing up the really important stuff to DVDR.

Well its ok if you are going to use it in conjunction with other methods. I would not rely on it solely for my backups though. Especially since there are such conflicting opinions as to how long a cd/dvd can live and also because they need special conditions for storage. Then again, I would not rely on any sole method for very important data. Its always best to use at least two different methods of backup.
The more important point that I was trying to make though was that its not a good backup method for daily backups or backups of large amounts of data.

Yes it will take a lot of time to backup 300GB to DVDrs, then make copies of them so you have offsite copies in case of disaster striking.
Or you may even make enough copies to send to all members of your family, it just depends on what is on those DVDs.

Incremental backups are now possible with Acronis True Image....my favorite backup utility for quite some time.
