The 1st time you see it, and I mean in a theater on the big screen, Kubrick's "The Shining" is about as suspenseful as flicks get. He just had a way of filming that made everything seem larger than life.
I saw both The Exorcist and The Omen when they first came out, and I give the edge to The Omen. I have never bought into the notion that you need extreme special effects for a horror flick, and The Omen was so understated it freaked me out. Probably also because I liked Lee Remick two years earlier playing a cousin of mine.
