Easier than a CAT5 cable, especially in some locations. :)
This is definitely a learning process for me. I'm an old wired desktop person...all this RJ45 and CAT5 (is that the ethernet cable?) is new to me...will let you know how it works out.
The RJ45 is just the type of plug crimped onto the end of the ethernet cable

a smaller RJ11 is used for the phone connection.

CAT5 is a type [catagory 5] of ethernet cable commonly used in networking.

Will just any old adapter do?
I'm going both wired and wireless.
Thanks for your help. I just don't have time to take this into a shop right now and want to get this over with.
First, you're going to need to decide which connection you're going to have, then start buying the parts.
Not any old PCMCIA card wireless or wired is going to work. And it all depends on what connection you have to which internet service. A wireless PCMCIA will give you more freedom, where a wired connection will tie you to a specific spot with limited mobility, but in my opinion would be more stable.
I just found this thread and see now why you were asking in the other post.
Actually it doesn't matter. I don't care if it's wireless or wired with a fast connection.
I have DSL w/ my desktop which is wired up.
Let's start over:
1) I have a toshiba satellite, no usb port, no internal ethernet card
2) I want to wire or wireless up so that I get a fast connection. I have a 56K modem now, dial-up service by SBC. I want a faster (DSL) OR (wireless) connection, I frankly don't care which. Since I already have DSL service with the desktop it might as well be DSL wired service - RJ45.
3) I bought the Syba ethernet 10/100 adapter. The CD did not auto-install. I could not find the correct "setup" program to install it. The card fit OK in the PC slot.
4) So obviously I bought the wrong brand name card, right? So which card should I buy? Everyone seems to think Linksys is the one i should buy, so I just ordered a Linksys RJ45 adapter.
Again -- I don't care if it's wired or wireless, I just want it to work and want to know that my laptop is compatible with whatever I buy. Thanks again all.
Looking at your system specs on the laptop, Linksys insists you have at least a 300Mhz processor and at least 64mb of ram. I know you have more than enough ram, but is your processor/cpu 300Mhz or more?
And yes, Linksys is the best of the two I suggested in your other post. Easier to set up also. Wired works for what you want. If you wanted to go wireless you'd have to buy more parts. Like a wireless router for you desktop, then set that as wired, your wireless card would in reality pickup the wireless router.
Thanks the specs are:
Processor: AMD K6-2
Memory: 196
Hopefully this Linksys works; don't know why the Syba wouldn't auto-install.
Yes, that's the processor name but what Mhz is the computer? The K6-2 can be anywhere from a 266Mhz to a 550Mhz. If you don't know for sure, Everest can tell you.

Okay guys here's the latest. I took the laptop to work and one of the guys got the device for SYBA installed, so t/SYBA is OK. Now I have 2 wired devices, the one by SYBA and the Linksys, but newegg said they would give me credit for both....so now I'm going to order the WIRELESS device....I just need to know what you reco.
I will have a wired and a wireless device.
Linksys seems to be the name of choice, but what exactly am I looking for? What speed? The processor in the Toshiba is 400Mhz AMD-6.
Linksys WPC54G 2.4Ghz 802.11g adapter is what you need.
Thanks i bought the D-Link model. Thanks anyway. Sorry, I should have edited my last messg.
I've had problems with those D-links. Won't even carry them in my shop.
The 56K modem is working...I'll let it stay with that until I get the wireless device. This has definitely been a lesson in laptop connectibility for me.
