w00t well it definatly was the bfg mobo that was at fault
the asus mobo arived this morning and after a few teething problms and several sticky plaster later for me fingers pc was up and running like a dream.
aquamark benchmark returned a result of 74878 and 3dmark came back with 15607 prety good results considering it is untweaked
had a little play on battlefiled 2 and was reaching 85-98 fps never droped below 85 this was on a full 64 player server.
conclusion
bfg mobo looked lovely just dident work wont hold that against them as it is there first attempt at a mobo and if there graphics cards are anythng to go by once they get there mobos all sortd im sure they will rock
i spoke to the overclockers techs and they said was i bothered about sli so i replied bnot realy as if it comes to that in the future and i can afford it it will be with the latest greates componets so they recomended an asus a8r-mvp
even though this is an ati crossfire complient mobo with the bfg 7800 in it absoloutely rocks
am still stress testing the sytem atmo but so far despite my reservations about asus i have been proved gladly wrong

you got 3DMark05? would love to see what you got. and BF2 is sooo much better with a 7800GT :) . can't tell you how much better i am now that I’m not lagging about. also previously smoke grenades would always kill me. reason being the takes my FPS down to about 10 of less. but now with my current system bring on the smoke. looks great and has almost no effect on FPS

hiyas well i downloaded 3dmark 05 and results are 6776 not sure where to compare them to see if that is any good lol hope that is of some use to ya john
