Thanks again, liam. I'll try that "Safe Mode Install" tonight and let you know of the results!
(I must emphasize that I actually had this game loaded and played it for 9 months. My father foolishly installed SP2 on my PC without my knowledge during a visit here (I'm still not done screaming at him for that!). After that, I got "DirectX 9.0" errors when I tried to play "Rome" again. A day of DXDiag with no errors shown resulted in an uninstall of "Rome". After that, I've been getting this condition shown in this thread (the crash to desktop error on re-install). I briefly had the Error 1610 (after deleting a reg key, per instructions on another site about how to fix this) but your 1610 fix solved that...so now I'm back to square 1!!!) This is the first time I've seen a "Install from Safe Mode"...so now I have 10+ hours of (false?) hope before I can attempt this!!

No probs, good luck with it, i don't think theres reason for false hope, this should be a good place to attempt the install, and i think in theory it should go fine.
The other option for a backup option, if it is even possible is to create and image of the install (ISO) and use a emulator to run it.....but that coulld take a while to create the ISO from 3 discs.

Well, liam, the plot sickens..
Per EventViewer: (this was an install from all files copied to C:)
8:26:53pm Product: Rome - Total War(TM) -- Installation operation completed successfully.
8:26:54pm Product: Rome - Total War(TM) -- Installation operation failed.
(note the 1-second time difference!)
I then re-started in SAFE mode and attempted again to install but it failed, saying that "Error 1607 - Can't install InstallShield" (or something like that. Error 1607, for sure).
I think I've had enough. I will check this site again over the next few days for any help but, after doing an exhaustive google on "Installation" + "Rome" + "Publishing Product Information" and trying everything I found, I'm still out of luck. At least that Google search showed that I'm hardly the only one experiencing this!!
All thanks to SP2.
For now, I give up. :(
