I appreciate you honesty and concern, but I didn't take it as sarcasm, but felt I should explain why I responded in the manner that I did.

Of course there have been threads where I have responded and have missed key points even when reading the whole thread.

This was not the case with this one as I was reposnding to the immediate issue at hand and not the larger scale problem.

The link provided by Ridgerunr appears to apply only to Services, not to actual application programs. I'm not sure if malware running as a service would appear in the Services list.

jdc2000: How could you find out if this were true or not? Do you think MS would have something in the Knowledge base about it?

Sheila, Windows XP different than Windows 98. As far as using MSCONFIG in Windows XP and unchecking items under the Startup tab IMO it's safe to do. Many do this with no problems but you do get that warning message which you can eliminate by checkmarking the small box "Do not show this again or whatever it says" down at the bottom. You will then not get this message untill you go back into MSCONFIG/Startup tab and chekmark or uncheck and item or items. What Ridg is referring to is Services (I believe) which are something different and I'd recommend letting them go unless you're experienced with them. This is only my opinion and I've had no problems using MSCONFIG as stated above.

Tufenuf: I think you are right, I should not mess with Services. I know nothing about this and I am always uneasy about trying something I don't understand or know anything about. I will do as you suggested when I go back to Swainsboro.
