i was just watching the news and the low down dog that raped and killed the little girl in florida will get food and water for the rest of his life. if the humane society finds animals that are underfed and not taken care of you will go to jail. but that is what this girl is doing starving and perishing to death' and that is my opinion

Just be aware that the photos you see in the media of Terry with her mother were taken a long, long, time ago(I believe 1995). Notice it is the same photo over and over again, purporting to show some physical reaction by Terry to her mother (what appears to be a smile). But what shape is she in today? Why haven't we seen photos and/or videos that are more current? Even the doctors who are disagreeing with the ones who claim she is in a "persistent vegetative state" are saying she is at "minimal consciousness"...what ever that means. Sounds to me like she is not responsive at all any more.
It just makes me sick at all the political and media hype this case is getting. It isn't about Terry Schiavo any more, but about political oneupmanship, bloodsucking lawyers and who is going to have book publishing rights when it's all over, etc..

How can "They" say she is in no pain? It hurts when you are hungry, why do we use humane methods to kill a man sentenced to death and inhumane methods to kill an inocent woman with brain injury? Lots of folks have TBI and this almost seems to be a precedent. If you want to stop taking care of your relative just get a Judge to sign their death warrant. I heard a lady put an ice cube in Terri's mouth and she was sucking on it and swallowing the water but the powers to be physically wrestled this woman out of the room. It's not like she is on life support with a respirator that is breathing and making her heart beat. At any rate if they are going to end her life, I don't understand why starving her is the way to do it, why not give her a shot that would do it instantly?
The other question is why does the Judicial Branch of the government seem to have so much more power over the other two branches of the government? I thought Executive, Judicial, and Legislative were all supposed to be equal in power, but it seems to me the Judicial branch is taking total power on this one.
It's not that it has "more power", but that this is a primarily a judicial matter. The legislative entities are involved only to the extent that they may have to pass some new laws (watch closely to see if the Florida legislature tries to pass a last-minute "midnight law"). The Executive side really has no say-so for the time being, except to try to influence the legislature one way or the other. Jeb Bush has to step lightly here so as not to get caught "pushing" the court's descisions....bad mojo, politically speaking.Quote:

Terri has no "life", she exists, but has no life.
Can you honestly say you would rather live as a vegetable and be totally dependent on others, making them carry on the burden that you can no longer handle?

Starvation is a terrible way to die but if that was my only option, then so be it.
When I lived in Michigan, we had Dr. Jack for cases just like this.
As Bistro said, yes the photos and video we see on TV are the same ones because her parents & family are not supposed to (not allowed to?) take any video or pictures (I guess with the intent of the media getting them?) I watched a documentary last night on Terri, and when they show the video of her parents telling her to "open her eyes" and she does, what they are not showing us is that these commands are repeated NUMEROUS amounts of times before she does this. It's not conclusive that she is responsive. They also showed the MRI of her brain. :( Basically, she's operating off of her brain stem. This same documentary went on to show other people that had been in comas for many years (15-16 I think) and these people eventually came out of them, only one of them came out being able to function, speak, etc. What they didn't show, and I wish they had, was MRI scans of THEIR brains. The one of poor Terri is basically a black area filled with spinal fluid where the brain has died off. No matter how you look at this situation, it's very sad and very tragic. I have been keeping an open mind on this situation, and as Terri's brother-in-law stated, Terri told him after a relative died a lingering death that she would NEVER want to be that way. If that is indeed what she said, then the fact that she didn't get a Living Will taken care of makes this situation even more horrific.
Perhaps her husband IS following her wishes as a caring husband? Or why wouldn't he "sign her over" to her parents and family?
Would I want to live like Terri? Absolutely not. Would my family follow my wishes to terminate my life if I was in the condition? ABSOLUTELY! Am I going to get a Living Will? You betcha.
My father and I had this talk about a Living Will yesterday, and he said since he KNEW it would be a hard decision for family to make if he became like Terri, he said he is leaving it up to his physician.
Triple7's, I think you are missing the point? If you would take food and water away from an animal they would put you in jail.What's next? If you are old and retired we take your life because you are not paying "BIG" taxes. I think this is the start of something "BAD" if you get my drift.I could understand if she was on all kinds of machines giving her life, but that is not the case.

Her parents and their lawyers have presented their case and have lost 23 court decisions. That has to say something about the evidence they are presenting, including expert medical evidence which I am sure is voluminous. From what I understand, they have switched from doctor to doctor to doctor when they don't line up with their stance. Very sad. I can understand her parent's desperation, but I think they are misguided and living an illusion.

DELTREE: When my beloved pet dog of almost 12 years was dying from bladder cancer (that we treated as constant UTI's, had ultrasounds done, etc.), it broke my heart to have to make the decision to euthanize her on Aug. 1, but I had to. Sometimes love is letting go...
I know you weren't suggesting that food and water being taken away is how we euthanize our animals.
I've always said animals are lucky, at least if they have a caring owner they can be euthanized to be put out of their pain and misery.
bistro and GetaGrrrip, If it was my daughter I think I would after all this take her home.I have never put anyone of our animals down, we do what we can till the end; there are all kind of pain pills and such.I thank GOD I don't have a child in that way, but I can't see puting her down. They will not even do that to some person that has taken life/or many lives they put them in jail for the rest of theirs. I have been prayer for her and her family, sad to say that is the only thing I can do.

You and I just have different viewpoints of what life "really" is.
Life is more then just being "alive".
Just because one may not be dependent on machines doesn't mean one is living a quality of life. Terri certainly is not. It has nothing to do with being a "taxpayer" or even being a productive human being. Those are non issues. To me, her eternal soul is "trapped" inside of a useless body and she is being held hostage until the end comes, whether naturaly or intentionaly.
You need to put yourself in her shoes, then ask yourself if you would rather move on or not.
If her parents and family would just respect her wishes and stop thinking of themselves, then she could be freed of her torture and her soul allowed to soar.
And yes, I'm all for doctor assisted suicide under the right circumstances.
