Photolady, I did use Arctic Silver - but still hung around about 48C. Part of the problem with my higher temps. was the computer being near an air duct and it being winter at the time. Nice to get the extra cool air around my computer during summer, but the heat put out during winter helped spike the temp. Suppose I could of tried moving my computer, but didn't want to put all the work in to recreate my comfy little alcove.
Thinking back, also had an ulterior motive for not simply trying a different fan - had been a while since I fired up my power tools, so cutting a hole for an extra fan provided an excuse.
As the other folks said, switching to a bigger, quieter fan is definitely something to consider. But with my mobo, if a put anything bigger above the CPU I'd have problems accessing memory slots, hard drive bays, etc. Albeit, you don't have to access this stuff too often, just something to consider.

Okay, just making sure Murph on the Artic Silver. ;) Before my last mobo went down this week, my temps were up to 50c then when I had to rebuild the pc w/new mobo, reapplied AS, thats when temps dropped to 39C.
I've never considered another heatsink/fan as this one was recommended when I first put this computer together, but it is rather large and sometimes hard to install.

Try this as a x-mas present: TT Volcano 12
:)
-
TT Volcano 12 Weight = 708g!!
Well at least if you are not happy with it, it will do some damage when you throw it out the window.:)
-
Heavy Cooling - Literally. :D
But seriously - I love it, even heavier gaming (BF1942) can't bring the CPU temp over 47ºC - and that's at about 70% fan speed !

Guys thought I'd ask for clarification are we talking about "on die" temps or "external" cpu temps as my 3000 XP barton with the Volcano 11 at about 4000rpms does 56 C and 41 C respectively. I always thought this was high considering I have six case fans! Thanks in advance.

Well,,this one isn't cheap 'or' light weight. But it utilizes all 6 clip points on the socket on my Asus A7V600-X board. Along with an 80mm Thermaltake 2,000rpm fan and Arctic Silver 5, it keeps my AMDXP 2500+(Mobile/45Watt) at 37c idle and has never gone beyond 42c under full load:

I also have the CPU a' bit O'r clocked at 2.25Gb and all has been well even with the hard video work I have it do...;)

This is with the Volcano 12, Arctic silver5, and 7 case fans. The cpu is a Barton core 3200+. As you can see my cpu is slightly over volted for ocing purpose's. The Hd's sit in front of the intake fans.
