enable the dog companion in XP

There should be a space after 'sfc' and before the /.

Start > Run, type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.

I did what you told me : sfc / scannow ( with a space before / and a space after / ) : this time nothing happened. No message at all.

There needs to be a space before the / but not after it.

To put it another way:

sfc[space]/scannow

ooops!!! sorry.
This time it worked, but when I inserted the System Recovery CD from the manufacturer, I received the message saying : wrong CD , please insert the CD XP home edition with SP1 ( of course the disks from the manufacturer contains only XP without SP1). I took out the free CD with XP home edition service pack 1 given out free from MS, and inserted it in, but same message.

Try system restore and see if that is of any help.

unfortunately, I have deleted all previous restore points, but the only last restore point.

There is always a drastic alternative which I do not want to consider: reinstall my HHD to the manufactuer default. Consider this, I'd have a lot to lose than gain. No, I won't do it.

HOW TO: Turn Off, Display, and Select an Animated Character in Search Companion in Windows XP. The troubleshooting section implies you can press F3 to get the Companion dialog, which includes the rest of the config stuff mentioned.

If I hit f3 again, it toggled me back to the attachment I sent to you, guys, when I first started the thread.:mad:

My understanding is that people that have recovery CD's and not a real XP CD can't run sfc /scannow.
