For those interested, some other user experiences with the new firmware on the befsr41 can be found here. Some users have reported DHCP lease renewal problems.
Also, for people with V3 of the SR41 the vunerability mentioned here still exists with the new firmware, but a workaround is mentioned in the report.
Thanks DrMDJ.
I checked your link to the posts on DSL Reports. To be honest, I really don't understand what most of them are talking about. My router is set up to obtain an IP address automatically. I don't understand all that other stuff. All I know is that mine seems to be working OK for the several hours that I was on line following the firmware upgrade.
Those people having all the problems - are they using their routers in a manner different from the average user; i.e., plug it in and forget about it?
Done mine too with no probs, thanks Calpitor.
rwinegar,
If you're not seeing any problems then that's good. I only pointed out the thread in the link above because it showed some people seemed to be experiencing a couple problems with the new firmware, and so that people here might be aware of these problems (as well as any solutions). As you can tell by reading the thread not every one is having problems, but some are (and in answer to your question: the bulk of the people are using their routers in a "normal" way).
The main problem some seem to report is that their ip lease does not renew automatically when it expires. The short version of what this means is as follows... If your broadband provider provides you (the router actually) with a dynamic IP address then when you connect your router recieves an address from the ISP DHCP server. A length of time is also established during which the address is valid (lease time). After this time (or during this time) the address must be renewed (or a new one gotten). Normally the router will automatically take care of this renewal. But what some people seem to be reporting is that the lease time expires and the router does not automatically perform the renewal process. The result: internet access is disrupted, and the user must manually (via the router admin screens) tell the router to renew (or obtain a new) address.
This certainly doesn't seem to be happening universally. But may be something for folks to be aware of and keep an eye out for.
Thanks DrDMJ for that explanation.
I've been running more than 24 hours with the firmware upgrade and have not experienced any problems. I think Linksys will need to patch this one real quick.
I have the Linksys router BEFSR41 version 3.
I followed the link, and clicked on the "download firmware", the saved it.
But, I could not open the file for the upgrade.
Please see attachment.
nganvu,
It looks like your link is to the page for the downloads, not the downloads themselves.
You need to download this file (the actual firmware), and this file (the firmware updater program. Then download this file. It is the instructions that explain what you need to do to actual perform the update.
Well, I downloaded the first link (the actual firmware), and please, look at what I got:
You only downloaded 1 of the three files I mentioned. You also need the flasher program, plus the instructions that will tell you how to flash the firmware on your router.
Let me download your three links, then I will post back.
No problem. The third file is the documentation that will outline exactly what you need to do.
DrMDJ:
I got it, finally.
Thank you so much for your help.
Have a nice day!
Ngan
Good deal! You're all set now.
It didn't work out for me in the end, I'm having the problems that DrMDJ mentioned. Now all I have to do is find the old firmware from here ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/
