See my link above.
This makes me think, maybe instead of getting a bigger internal hd, I should get an external hard drive. All I want is more space because the backup files & system are taking up most of the hard drive space.
What's your thought about that?
maybe get a 40gig ext hard drive and put the backup system on THAT, therefore freeing up space on the C: hard drive?

Personally I've gone for extra internal drives. From the point of view of backing up an external drive is marginally safer, but it'll cost you more and isn't quite as convenient. It's really a matter of preference as much as anything - as long as you've got the extra drive, that's the important thing.

I concur with the previous opinions to NOT rely on GoBack. GoBack has a terrible history of crashing systems, especially when you try to use other disk utilities. Typically, in those circumstances, you have to start from f-disk.
I have used PowerQuest's Drive Image and V2i Protector, Desktop Edition. The only difference between V2i and Drive Image is that you can easily do incremental backups with V2i. Incremental backups can be scheduled or done on demand.
I think that it is particularly important that these backups be on a different hard drive and in a separate partition. It is also a good idea to periodically do a test restore.
You don't want to do your first restore, the first time your system crashes. This is just way too tempting for Murphy's law to be activated.
