I was indeed, as i said, referring to "Windows Messenger" (the one that comes default with XP), it's an optional component and you can choose not to install it by using an answer file "winnt.sif"...
...same thing for Automatic updates and quite a few of the other XP features/settings.
...ofcourse, it may not help the current situation, but it's worth knowing for any future XP installs.
Okay, and now:
-the red battery light flashes for long periods off and on.
-windows usually open all sizes but max.
-I got AdAware, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster first off.
-EndItAll v1 doesn't shut down the icons in systray (Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus, and Ghost.
-Norton Internet Security says I must download Java to be able to trace the few Backdoor Trojan after it provides me with the ping number of the sites.
-and THE question: how do I access my other two drives? I want to put my burned MP3s there. Should I be installing programs and software, like MusicMatch, on one of the other drives...they're called slave drives, yes?

Have you right clicked the I.E. icon in your quick launch and also in Start>programs and on the 'run' dropdown selected 'maximized'?Quote:

Personally, i'd dump Norton altogether(uninstall properly) and get Zone Alarm and a 'good' AV such as AVG(free) or my preference, eTrust EZ Antivirus. Have a hunch it's Norton that's causing End It All to not function properly. I have End It All vers.1 on my XP-home box and it works very well.

As to your 'other' drives,do you mean partitions? If your drive has more than one partition,they should be listed in 'My Computer'. Transfer files and mp3's to these,but i wouldn't try to 'install' programs to any but your C: (operating system) drive if that's what you mean...
Yes, "Windows Messenger" is a scaled down version of MSN Messenger that operates on the same network. I think they used to call it .NET Messenger as well. Whereas the Messenger service is completely unrelated and is useless for home users, generating a lot of annoying popups nowadays unless you disable it or have a firewall.Quote:

Ridgerunr - it's a desktop computer and the next to the 'on/off' green light on the front of the tower is a red light that has a battery icon below it. It flashes wildly sometimes, and sometimes it's off altogether. It seems to flash more when I run WMP.
Followed your tip about IE>Properties>Run>Maximized. We'll see if that helps.
Yes, by other drives I mean partitions. I have 3 altogether:
C = 10 GB (it's where my XP etc is and has almost 2/3 free space.
F = 10 GB (totally empty)
G = 60 GB (totally empty)
The reason I had my 80GB harddrive partitioned is from all I've read (Langa etc) it is more stable and easier to maintain (scandisk/defrag etc). No? So I thought I'd put all my MP3s on the other 10GB partition. No? And so too I don't know what else. It's awfully big! I had a 13 GB harddrive for 4 years and never used more than 4GBs.
What the hell am I going to do with all this space?
All my CDs..baby pictures...recipes...No?.....h..e..l..p...:confused:
BTW, my pages scroll up and down strangely - jerkily smoothly and irregularly. When I use the up/down arrows. I've been making a 'few' tweaks as per The Elder Geek and TLab404. I have a bad habit of enjoying tweaking, like someone biting their nails.:(

Hi babbler,,that light you see flashing is more than likely your hard drive 'activity' light. Just showing you the read/write on your drive. Yes, partitions are a good thing and yours looks good. Don't worry about 'all that space' If you start to store things such as video files, you'll be glad you have it.;)
Yes,defragging is much easier for your system with about 10Gigs instead of the whole drive for the OS. And your drive doesn't have to look all over creation for the bits n' pieces that can be scattered all over the drive.
On the scrolling thing, try going into IE tools>internet options>advanced tab. Look to see if there is a check in 'use smooth scrolling' on the list. May help with that. Also look in control panel>mouse>wheel tab(if you have a wheel mouse). You can change the scrolling features/speed there...
'Use smoothe scrolling' is checked. I unchecked and rechecked it but the windows are still scrolling in a jerky-smooth way. There is no 'Wheel Tab' on my mouse properties icon. Maybe this weird scrolling was caused by my changing the Speed Up Menu Display as per XPTweaks site? I'll go back there and undo those instructions.
I'd love to be able to access my two other partitions but haven't figured that out yet.
Finally (maybe?) you know how Win98 always shows the total MBs used by a folder or file or MP3 etc at the bottom of the open window? Can I get XP to do that too?
Today I'm installing my previous antivirus (NOD) and ZoneAlarm. Smart move?

Can't you open "My Computer" and access your other partitions? From there I've put shortcuts to my D, E and F partitions on my desktop.
Well I partly figured it out - I just dragged and dropped all my MP3s from CDs to my F partition. When I download and install something, like I just did with MusicMatch, it automatically goes to my C drive and I would like to keep that drive free for OS etc. Do I have to drag and drop all the things installed there to my F partition or is there a way to download/install directly into my F partition?
And I tried EndItAll several times, but the stuff I mentioned that it doesn't shut down are still in systray.
to activate the 'status bar' at the bottom of the browser or
windows explorer .... it's under 'view' on the toolbar.
put a check on status bar.
then you'll get the total kbs in each folder.
Status Bar IS checked, always has been. And what happened to 'View>As Web Page'? That made my file searches so much easier!

There are three different programs.
Messenger Service, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger.

Any one can get MSN Messenger, and it can be uninstalled from Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs.
As you have seen from the first reference, Windows Messenger, which comes with WinXP, is not the same as MSN Messenger.

In Outlook Express Tools|Options|General tab, you can opt to have Windows Messenger not run at boot.
Note that Steve Gibson's "Shoot the Messenger" program is to disable Messenger Service, not Windows Messenger.
The disappearing status bar is a fairly common bug with IEX6 that can be easily fixed.. here's the way..

There are a few programs, Musicmatch being one of them, which automatically install themselves to "C". It is that way for all of us. Most programs let you choose where to put them. You will be presented with a message sayng "Install to C:\Program files....... Beside this will be a "Browse" Button. You can use this button to select where to install onto any drive.Quote:

On a plus note, SP2 will disable the "Messenger Service" by Default, so that's one less thing to worry about when SP2 goes final...
For now I just disable all the services i don't want via a registry import, so it can be done in one go, either during or after the installation of XP.
