Acronis was rated kick *** by maximum pc a few months back....they were giving out upgrade discounts for users of ghost...got the full proggie for 10 bucks after giving them my ghost reg code.....it is a very cool program...works much like the big 2...but you can work from inside windows.
Defrag, just about everyday. Why, so often? I tend to slam things like run programs that make huge files. By huge, I am talking GBs here.
Scan disk about 4 times a week.
Update the AV about daily.
Use Ghost 2001 to clone C: to D: as needed
Use DI2002 to make my image cd's about weekly
Run AV when i feel like it.
Adaware about once a month and it finds nothing.

Another minor point is to occasionally check your msconfig file and Task Manager to see if any newly downloaded/installed programs have added more processes and/or are running quirky stuff in the background. Some proggies will add stuff there that is just fluff and unecessary.

Dang Murf,,sorry to see you go:( Umm,,,could it be you were just waiting for a good excuse to totally build a new machine?? Well,, it's not a 'good' excuse,,but your 'maintenance?' program will definitely reap it's rewards to the vendors! :D
I'm still rather a newbie with XP, but i "think" :confused: i now have a fair handle on it as far as making it behave itself. Now,,the cleanup regimen i use is probably not the best around, but it's gotten me to the point of being a' bit nervous 'cause i 'haven't' had any crashes in quite sometime. :eek:
Everything i list with the exception of defrag,is done at least once a week. Cleaning out junk files,cookies,useless logs and such may be done much more often depending on how wild i've been screechin' around the web and installing/uninstalling dn/loaded programs. Usually not so much because i 'need' them,but many times just to see if they screw-up my system and to learn how to recover and avoid such [*-deleted word-*] in the future.;)
My first run is with SpyBot S&D. I have it set to bring up all the logs,MRU's and other stuff it can find that accumulate quickly. I run it without shutting anything down most of the time. Not only so i can check for updates,but also to find if there's any interference with it from running programs. Never found any,,,yet.:p
I then use good ol' EndItAll(yep,works fine on XP),to close my firewall,AV and a' couple other basic startup programs.
I then run the original Reg Cleaner (that is no longer available,and you have to pay to get Juoni's 'tools' program now). It also works fine with XP. And,,unlike the days of Win98,it 'always' finds at least 4 junk entries added from who knows what.
I then run Toni Art's Easy Cleaner to clean unnecessary junk files and reg garbage.( just a' note, you need to set it to skip the 'help' files or it will cause problems.Otherwise it works fine)
Next, i run good ol' HD Valet. It's no longer free since PC Mag decided to start chargin' for their utilities, but it can still be found at 'other' locations;) . The ol' toke of 'no one program does it all' shows up here, because it finds TIF files that SpyBot missed, most of the time.I check it's log file and then delete the log.
I then run disk cleanup to dump the junk permanently from recycle bi and etc.
Still not sure how good a job it does,but i use the 'run' box to set up a disk scan. chkdsk /f most of the time, or chkdsk /r if it's been quite awhile.
Before i re-boot to let diskscan do it's thing, i run another ol' program first. Yeah,,that's right,,Spider from the ol' days:cool: Works fine on XP if you go to it's options menu first and tell it to scan the 'whole' hard drive for the index.dat junk url's. Naturally, XP has moved their location and it won't find them without this command. It then wants you to re-boot anyway, so that's why i wait to do the chkdsk.
Not much more for me,unless i decide to do defrag,which is what i do next.
I use the old version of ZA(2.6), which works very well with one exception. It has a tendency on XP to forget an entered program at times. you just have to allow permission for the program(usually SpyBot) to access the net and then re-enter the checks in it's program box. Running the 'shields up' program at Steve Gibsons site always show complete stealth(invisibility to the net) whether i have my router in the loop or not.
About once a' week i do a full virus scan with my eTrust EZ Antivirus. And CA has updates just about every day lately. Maybe i'm just lucky, but i haven't been hit by a nasty yet.
Only problem i've had with XP-home is that it lost my internet connection completely about a week ago. Never did discover whether to blame it on XP or Comcast. Called their 'tech' and yada-yada-yada for 'bout ½ hour. LAN said, no packets in,,no packets out. Checked the ipconfig and tried to release/renew,but no go. Finally wiped the NIC drivers and let Winders re-install them and all has been fine since.
So,,no major crashes,,reset many of the 'services' with help from people here and Black Vipers tweaks with no dire results. The only thing that 'bugs' me now,is that things are just going along 'too' well. Guess i have leftover quivers from my learning days on Win98!? :eek: :D

Hi ridgerunr, Thanks and this is just what we need to help get us going on this, probably one of the most important tasks we have to do to take care of our PCs.

I was trying to be Sarcastic....Isabel has me fizzled, waiting for the insurance adjuster.
Anyway's I like most do try and keep em tidy, actually have three that I care for, they are like children..all have W2K Pro.
I run Corporate edition of Norton AV, got it from work, as I bring work home. It automatically updates all by it's lonesome while I'm on line, also scans all my incoming email...so have not been hit with any virus in at least 3 years....
I run ADWARE at least once a week to clean out the porn, no I don't go to porn sites, but you always pick some up somewhere, without you knowing it.
Also use Zone Alarm version 3.7.2, it takes care of blocking what I don't want or need.
Use a router so also have a hardware firewall.
I defrag once a month and run chkdisk (W2K) once a week.
That's all I do. I download a lot of programs to experiment with, when I remove them I will do a manual search in the registry to remove any orphan entries and clean out the temp folder.
BTW Train: The dishwasher may see this keyboard before the night is over with..
My son uses Kazaa on his, so he runs Adware weekly and I go in and dump temp's weekly. Also have Norton AV, Firewall on his - networked to mine.
My wife's laptop is hooked up to my router (wireless), she runs adware oncve a week. I do most of the maintenance on her's, defrag monthly, and chkdsk monthly.
I have not backed anything up. Something I must do, just lazy. I run W2K on it's own NTFS partition, everything else is on a different partition. Have GHOST, just need to take the time to burn a backup...
Well, I am "fairly" new to Virtual Drive and I quickly say I have found a home here----and I am comfortable. You folks have helped me learn much of what I 'know'.
I was tipped off about this new Delta thing and so, here I am.
You probably won't learn much from me but then again I may just do something different than you and that may be of some help.
Maintenance:(Seems to be the central theme right now.) I use Task Scheduler to automatically run Nortons AV at the same time once per week on both machines that I have networked with the Alcatel external modem and the Linksys BEFSR41 DSL Router. NAV is also automatically updated as Symantec deems necessary, however I manually download and install any new virus definitions before my weekly AV scan. Scandisk of the HDD and then Defrag is done weekly. I use AdAware, Spybot and Spywareblaster once or twice per week. I let IE5.5SP2 delete my TIF files when I turn off machines at end of the day and I also use Cookie Jar to help keep those cookies "in line". Because DSL is an "always connected" to the web feature, I try to remember to always have the computers fully booted BEFORE I turn on the modem(yeah I turn it and router off at the end of the day!!) I feel safer that way.
I use 'most' of the software that you have mentioned but Ghost has always been difficult for me to grasp and so I don't use it. I ordered the $9.99 TrueImage 6.0 spoken of and I have it saved on my PC and I had Ghost installed then but forgot to install TI BEFORE removing Ghost. I have not used it because of that and I hesitate to install Ghost again to try TI. I have used Drive Image 2002 and it is installed on my PC. The read of TI vs. DI makes me think TI is easier!
I virus scan everything that should be scanned; including what I may receive from my family(probably most needed)
I have a work folder where I download any and everything I might find on the web that I might be interested in, virus check it and then may install it after I have created an info read file about the software and studied that info.
In my signature file I try to describe my 2 PCs in such a way that I don't have to always describe either machine when I post a question.
