We all think this now but remember, there was a time when 486's used in space shuttles. When bill gates said that 640k of memory is more than enough.
Now look where we are.
But the next 10-20 years there will be people looking back and saying how slow computers where.
This view will go on and on, this is what gets me excited, the thought of what's or whats not to come.

Big changes in the last 4 years. P II 400MHZ to P4 3.2GHZ.
Ram speed has improved, FSB can stand some help. But those slow poke hdds and pci buses need help real seriously! APG is right there with them also!

hey, P3, I still have a Voodoo 3 16 mb ram, still kickin :D . I can still play my friends in uh, Red Alert... Speaking of new technologies, there was some sort of NASA material I read about called "aerogel" some kinda superconductive material thats supposed to replace the "stone age" silicon (no more rocks for processors). :)
Also, I think it's already available, for I read this almost a year, of E-PCI or ultra PCI, something to that tune. Its bandwidth even in its infancy whips AGP's by quite a large margin. By 2020, maybe, just maybe, Microsoft will make a decent OS. No more fatal flaws in the computer that wipes your registry by opening a word pad or a bug that will send your credit card numbers to all of Thailand.

Strangely enough I was just saying to my wife that new processors are being released so quickly now, it makes you wonder if they have already invented the super processor and are just releasing incremental updates to make money off the people who must have the newest and best.
ie processors seem to be constantly improving whereas other components have hit their limit. For a while CD-ROMS and burners were advancing but seem to have hit around a 52x limit and now DVD speed is advancing.
So it would seem that maybe there are some limitations on some things or myabe it's not worth spending the money on advancing that particular hardware.
The other thing is 'bloating'.
My father in law just purchased a system that has a 2.4Hz processor, 512Mb Ram WinXp etc etc when I checked it out on the weekend, it seemed slower than my 950Mhz 384Mb WinMe system.
I didn't check into what was running in the background and I know my system is pretty slick in terms of tweaking I've done, but for something brand new vs 2.5 years old I would have throught it would be cranking.
I agree there on that one, maybe they HAVE al ready cracked a super cpu....
But if they were to have limitations on other hardware, what would be the point in having super fast comonents mixed in with 'joe average' ones? On this point maybe they will be forced to develop newer and better CDRW's and such.
Or maybe a whole new removeable media device altogether? Any1 heard anything abot this in the pipeline? Or any other exciting new developments?

I like the technology, I am sitting here running a new P-5 7.5GHZ, with 3.5MB TDR (triple data rate), RAM, and two 400GB hard drives, I also have a 384MB NVIDIA card and a 100/1000/10000 NIC card too.
Tuly this machine is great, and I just can't wait until next month to get my newly ordered machine that is twice as fast as this one. I only paid 12,000.00 for this one. The 750 watt power supply only blacks the house out 3 times a week with my house transformer upgrade for just 15,000.00. A real steal.

Technology is moving so fast one has to wonder if they really have a product perfected before they release the lastest upgrade? In the race to market the latest and fastest gismo, quality seens to get lost. Where will it end? Computers are already fast, how do you make them faster?
If I look back at the past 10 years here is what I see.
I'll use my computer from 10 years ago as an example:
33Mhz
250MB HDD
1MB SVGA Video Card
4MB RAM
2400bps modem
Windows 3.1/DOS 6
Ten Years Later:
We have CPU's above 3Ghz and 64 bit processing for desktops
More gigs of HDD space than I would know what to do with.
256MB Video cards with GPU Speeds that make my 5 year old computer look stupid.
(My system here has 1 gig of pc2700 RAM)
A whole new world of operating systems, here and some on the way that some of us are excited about seeing.
And who could'nt live without a cable modem! I know people can live without them, but I personally could never use dial up ever again.

OK, Luke Im with you on the whole cable modem thing, i have had broadband coming up to 2 years now and i cannot think about how depressing it would be to go back to dial-up. That screeching noise aghh i would go crazy. I reckon though its getting easier and easier for people to get broadband now so i reckon dial up will slowly go away.
Ecrosson youve just given me another thought, we are thinking about new technology but with that has to come more power demands how much power will our future componets require? will we have to cut the supply to the tv just so we can turn our computers on?
