3rd OT Topic :D California Dreamin

Not being in or from California I don't know what the deal is behind the recall, but wasn't this guy just re-elected this past November? Hmmm......

And as Leurgy stated, it's a breeze to get into the race. Hell, there's porno stars, no-names, and other wanna-be politicians in the race. Nobody who really cares about Governing is ever seen. It has simply become this week's big Hollywood media event, which makes me kinda feel bad for people who actually live in Cali.

And the election process isn't really fair, either. In the same election, voters make their choice to recall Davis and then choose their candidate to replace him. So, Davis MUST get over 50% of the vote to stay in office, but Arnold Kennedy (sorry, had to) can win theoretically with about 15-20%. Again I say...Hmmmmm...:confused:

OK, now that's just plain rude. There's no need to bring this level of disrespect into what continues to be an otherwise thoughtful, well reasoned debate on issues that will shape the future of this country. The man has a proper name, and whether we agree with his politics or not, there's no reason to denegrate him by slurring his heritage. Really, though, can anyone from California give us any indication of what he's running with? All we get in TN are CNN clips of him saying uber-generic things like "I'm going to be the people's governor" and that kind of junk. Has he given any press conferences or speeches with any real info about his plans?? I'm not going to say that celebrities shouldn't run for public office, just not based solely on their celebrity and nothing else. Hollywood stars have gone both ways in the past - Reagan did a decent job as President (not flawless, but he is still considered to be one of the best in recent times), Fred Thompson is a very well spoken individual who kept promises that he made from the start (not making a career out of the Senate, and he didn't, although I wish he WERE still there). On the other hand, you have Jesse the ______ Ventura (fill in the blank with whatever you like).

Big Johns list is not only funny, but points out how eager we are to pass laws. Clearly, many (most?) of the examples made sense at one time, and were passed to address specific situations. But it also points out that 1) our representatives are too lazy/busy to make sure the laws reflect current society, and 2) we are a constantly changing society, and need to be very careful that we don't pass laws as a knee-jerk reaction to something that bothers us now, but may make no sense later on. If I may prime the pump for next week's OT subject, a good example of this is the recurring attempts to pass a flag-burning amemdment to the Constituion. Arnold may or may not get elected (my guess is not). My biggest concern with this type of election is that we'll elect people that just want to please those who complain the loudest and we end up with more laws that seem ridiculous 20 years down the road. This just undermines the effectiveness of the laws that do make sense, and people loose respect for laws as a whole (witness the whole RIAA debacle).

I new there was something dreadfully amiss in California when while visting my nephew in Lake Tahoe a guy came around the corner in a 1949 Caddy convertible with two dogs in the back seat wearing sunglasses. (real dogs) :)

Hi, does the lower 48 mean that Alaskan's call you guys "down under"? I must say I much enjoyed my visits to California, especially San Francisco remindes me of Sydney the world's most beautiful City.

Way back when I lived there, (1950-1959; Anchorage & Juneau), we "Alaskan's" simply referred to the contiguous United States as the "lower 48".
