I think Whitphil has a very simple solution, you might try that first.
look c:\windows\command\scandisk.ini under header
[ENVIRONMENT]
LabelCheck = Off ; On, Off
LfnCheck = On ; On, Off
Welshjim's link is very clear if you want to use Scandisk.
If you are afraid to go in safe mode, you can disable all programs in the background by pressing control alt delete.
Disable all of them except explorer.

Thanks XOR. Will give it a try. Also, will post back the results.

Perhaps someone can give you a link to EndItAll. This is a small and free piece of software that will allow you to close ALL running applications far more easily than Control/Alt/Delete.
Maybe a Google search for it will find it for you. This, of course, is not an answer to your problem but instead is of help to you to more quickly close running programs. If it is found, I would opt to download/install the 1.1 version(I think that is the version.)

Ctrl-Alt-Del for close program window. Click once to highlight program, then click "end task". May get another box asking if you want to close program or wait. Click "end task" on that also. Need to re-open close program box for each item. Leave Explorer and Systray running...
Orr,, as said, get "End It All" here: http://www.the-old-sea-dog.net/enditall.html
