Another vote for AVG. Seems to me it updates as much as anyone else maybe even more, doesn't hogg computer resources, doesn't place adds on the computer, is easy to use, and best of all free.

Well having tried Norton, Macafee, Trend, AVG, and a few others, I have now stuck with Panda Anti-Virus Titanium. It may not be the best, but it works for me, has not caused any silly problems so far, and updates itself.

I have Norton System Works 2002 on my system, and I will probably upgrade to System Works 2003 soon. I have been using Norton's for years, and it works perfectly. If it's configured correctly, you should have no problems at all. There is a live update 'at least' once a week, to catch all known viruses and trojans. I keep mine on auto live update, and it does it for me,..with a little box popping up on my system tray, telling me when it's done, then closing. I have a hard time believing that it only caught 83% of viruses thrown at it, because I have never ever gotten any virus. It runs so efficiently and quietly, you never know it's there. My vote is for NAV :)
BTW..If you do ever go with System Works, instead of plain NAV 2003, make sure to disable Norton System Doctor *which runs silently in the background to keep a constant look out for probs, but has been known to be a major pain and resource hog...and cause crashes*.

Pccillin is still the best rated software for all around service, scan updates and virus alerts. I've been using it for over 2yrs and the awards they've received are no b.s. , they are number one in all areas except cost. It's not free. 49.95 or try for 30days free.

We use Norton 2003 at my business, and have always had great luck with it. When properly configured and updated regularly, we have had NO infections or anything missed.
However, at home I use AVG, the free version. I have had no problems or infections at my house at all, and I promise you that AVG uses far less of your system's resources than ANY of the commercial packages.
If I continue to have the same good luck, we'll switch over to AVG the next time our subscriptions run out for Norton.
Good Luck! :D

I too use the free Grisoft AVG and without any problems, and go monthly to Trend Micro Housecalls to be double sure. No viruses so must be working.

I have had no problems at all with free antivir personal edition.

I ' ll add my mark for AVG free. 18 months now with no viral / worm infection.
I also use reprot..... to keep an eye on the registry.... this is the blurb from their site......
RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows security and intrusion detection. By monitoring important locations and keys in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change, reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key.

It works , not that any viruses have gotten past AVG.
With both running on my comp I still have 95 percent of my resources free at start up.

We have tried various AV solutions (Norton, InnoculateIT etc), but have found that Sopos AV has been the best of the lot.
Tech support is very good if there issues with configuration (i.e. rolling out across WAN links) and it is included in the licensing costs. It also got better when Sophos Enterprise Manager was included.

Just found this..
http://www.mailwasher.net/
Hmmm for single user/single email box, looks like nifty Just d/led it but not tried it yet. 2M downloads you can check out the spam at the mail server.
Other things to consider about a.v. most professional isp servers do have their own a.v. and you probably won't get much junk. Sufing in the wild without the protection of i.e. compuserv or basically you're surfing through a proxy server, you really need a pay for version of some a.v. the free stuff just doen't cover all the bases.
my opinion with hefty research..

One PC used e-trust's EZ AntiVirus. No problems yet. It's caught a few virii that did sneak in and cleaned them with no trouble (or fanfare). Minimal resources, updates itself daily almost invisibly. Triny AVG on the other computer, no problmes there, either. And it's free, so you really can't complain. I recently added Startup Monitor, which is a WONDERful tool to stop those pesky apps (like QTTASK) from trying to get in your startup list - sometimes just by viewing a webpage with a vague reference to a Quick Time file. Also, you can't live without Spybot S&D - the new innoculation features are simply awesome.

WOW - thanks to all of you for your input. Sorry it took me so long to get back here but my system at home is acting up and takes for ever to do anything so I only use it when i have to. So the only way is from work to access but can't do that all the time.
I will look at all the suggestions and take it from there. REally appreciate all your comments too. I have a lot of study to do before making a decision.
Thanks to all of you for your help

Have you looked into fprot anti-virus?
Check it out:

I'm pleased with the lack of resources and lag time that I've had with McAfee and Norton.

Hi 'gin... well I did check out mailwasher 'up page' and it is not perfect for identifying all the spam. But but.. hell of a lot easier to read my mail from the server!! Having to log into isp mail server etc.!! I have dsl and you'd think their own home page would load like lightening? nada, no way. Then log in. Then wait for several pages to load. This puts them on one page and easy to review and delete.
Regardless worth a look and no bugs on this one.
Only problem with my mail server is I (should log out) and this app doesn't provide for that. So what! isp times me out as fast as vrdr. andyway! :D send/receive worked fine couple of minutes later. I blew 90 junk ads without waiting for isps home page.
Haven't tried the bounce back feature.

I bought PC-cillin 95 years ago because they had lifetime virus updates free. With PC-cillin 2000 they started charging me. So I now use AVG free version. I put Nortons on my system and answered one of their questions wrong and it trashed my hard drive. I will not have anything Norton or Symantec on my machine.
