Microsoft Updates
I don't know which CD you're referring to. I would only install the updates, critical or not based on whether they pertained to me, but the critical ones were downloaded because I thought they needed to be! I think I was told it was okay to update with the HP updates but not to rush to download the Microsoft updates because of the problems--I was told to contact HP directly before doing this. My updates were done when I was notified by HP of the updates and the Microsoft update may have been obtained after I read about it being available.
My situation now is I have XP Home up and running again with no updates or upgrades at all installed--what would you do now?

My Compaq Pressario 5460 came to a total halt last month following my download of SP1 from the Windows update site. Two techs could not figure out what happened, it would only boot to the Compaq blue screen and not load Windows 98 SE. A third tech managed to install Windows 98 over the Windows 98 SE which allowed me to save my files. I bought a new puter and will never again download a critical update until it has aged for 6 months or so. Micro$oft is not our friend!

So it seems! Does Compaq send you information about updates available, and if so do you update from the manufacturer? :)
