Of course, you're absolutely right! And I stand corrected on my hasty statement, that statement being taken in isolation from the issue.
So - IE could be used to open folders, but even if reddice had used that method to open his folders, on closing them explorer.exe would have been the program to have crashed. And as Rog pointed out, I also have a feeling it's caused by spyware/adware.

I'm wondering now that spyware/adware has been mentioned, if Reddice has a pop up stopper on his computer also.
I did at one time have one of these programs installed and it stopped everything....even windows folders from opening.....:(
Just a thought, mine alone!! ;)
