As stated in my thread above,in my cleanup regimen,i also use a program to clean out junk/temp files that does a very good job. HDValet. It's from PC Magazine's Neil Rubenking. Trouble is,PC Mag is now charging for their dn/loads. :( It "is" available elsewhere however. But to keep the person offering it from getting into possible trouble, just do a Google search and look close at the results. Most will take you to PC Mag,but one won't...:D

Jessica:
I've got a feeling that you are running your batch file from the desktop. If so, it will not work as you intend. If you try to delete the Cookies index.dat file via Windows it will nag and refuse to do it. Implementing deltree in a batch file, with or without /y, will not see DOS nag - it will simply ignore the instruction. DOS is very forgiving but sometimes too forgiving.
Take Ridgerunr's advice and read WhitPhil's post.
BTW don't create files with NotePad and save them to your desktop unless it is temporary. One day you'll be dusting the desktop removing some rarely used shortcuts and your files will end up in the bin as well. This is in keeping with my suggesting you do not download to the desktop either.
On a final note I'll remind you to have a look the link I supplied in my first post - it might just do what you want.

OK..I decided to do away with the .bat file.and just clean out my files using IE/tools/internet options...then..Spider, then Spybot and Adaware to get rid of all the spyware and usage trackings. I also have Norton System works 2003..where I use the Clean sweep "fast and safe cleanup" to get any extra residue..which is always a small amount. Think that will be enough? :)
Also..can anyone recommend a simple..easy Pop up stopper that's free? I tried Proximitron...and POW..but they just seemed too complicated. I did also try popup killer--and not only was that just a 30 day trial...but it changed to 'popup ad filter' when i opened the exe..so I guess they renamed it (???) It seemed simple and worked pretty well though :) especially compared to the other two totally free ones I sampled. Is it worth the price?
Update: I just added this neat little program..it doesn't stop popups before they popup..but it allows you to close them all with one click http://www.geocities.com/closeiex/
Any opinions on this freeware? Has anyone ever tried it?

Just before you leave the batch file route pay a visit to this page.
It has six batch files starting with a novices version rolling up to a beast of a bat. If you are au fait with batch files then go for the beast and customise to suit.

XP is based on NT so I doubt if the batch file will work as they are in DOS>

Don't use many batch files myself, but my understanding is they need to be placed in the root folder of C: to run properly...
The popup program i use is Popup Stopper from PanicWare. The basic/free program does a good job. I do not, however, let it run at startup. Just stick the icon on quick launch and run it as needed. http://www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html

Quite so, Train.
I should have said 5 versions re a 98 box.
#6 also works on ME which is, of course, 9x lineage.

This should get you lot thinking.
I have a file on a Ram Disk, with a save/load image facility, which cannot be deleted in Windows. Nor can the file be deleted in DOS as the Ram Disk is set up on the way to the desktop. What I have been doing is to turn off the image save/load temporarily. Wininit.ini won't work. Winstart won't work.
Guess what? I've dropped a batch file into the Local Machine Run Once key and the file was killed and rebuilt before I hit the desktop.
So, we could have a batch file in LM Run Once to clear our index.dats. A simple script Merge and off we go!

Ridg...unfortunately that link now downloads only popup stopper Pro, which gives you a 30 day trial only. I even did a search on popup stopper basic, and downloaded at every link...all of them turning into Pro.
I guess most great software that starts out as a freebie, will eventually end up charging. Or, they take the other route, like hotmail, where they start taking away more and more space, until you have no other choice but to buy more storage. I get 5 emails these days..none of them big, and they are redzoning me..saying I need to buy more storage as my box is filled up..and I may not be receiving all my mail. Every few mos..the space they give for free..is reduced little by little. Dang..I can already here us 5 yrs from now.."Remember those days when almost everything on the internet was free?". LOL

Jessica, look here:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...=popup+stopper
After posting this info, I did run into a couple of links that
I had to use the Cntrl key on but very few.
And, this version leaves some popups, occasionally, to be
closed after you disconnect.
Hope it helps.:)

Jessica11,,If you scroll down a' bit, you'll see: Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition at 456K. This is the free version...

Thank you sooo much Ridg and Nick..that's exactly what I was looking for!! It's simple to set up, no frills, *free, hehe * and does the job. Plus..as opposed to the Pop Up Stopper Pro, it only has that small white hand..instead of integrating it's own tool bar into your browser *S* I think I will be very happy with this :)

Reg Cleaners
Jessica11,
I have used a number of cleaners and the one that I find the fastest is Clean-Up from The Strangely Green Chicken Co. Enter Clean-Up into Google to find the link. It's free.
It's downside is that there it cleans out the Recycle Bin and there is no option to prevent this. I always run it before is do a reg clean and/or defrag.

Thanks Rex..I will also look into that :)
