I tried to play a movie in safe mode and the picture was there (well, a very basic picture!) but there was no sound at all so I couldn't tell if it was playing without the stutters and echo.
I am thinking about the 2000 option though.....

If it is any help, I have noticed that if I play a movie on any player (usually media player 7.something) the mouse pointer begins to flicker on the same "beat" as the stuttering playback (if you know what I mean!). When the stuttering starts, the pointer flickers at the same time. Does that make sense?
