Everything you'd ever want to know about burning software and media(disks) can be found here:http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd.shtml
Click on the "CD Media World Forums" up top for a good place to learn also.
Keep in mind, just because the spindles of CD-R's you buy say Memorex, doesn't mean they are actually "made" by Memorex. Most of it is farmed out to"no-name" media Mfg's. There is a small program you can dn/load that will tell you who actually made the blank you have in the drive called CDRIdentifyer. If your interested, you can get it here: http://www.gum.de/it/download/english.htm

Feurio reads maker info too. And Nero has an Info Tool that does. The Info Tool is a small file, and something you don't install. Just click on it to bring it up. The latest is 1.03

Thanks again you guys.
Ridgerunr,
Thanks for the information. I joined the other forum and am learning already. I also downloaded the program you recommended and ran it, worked like a charm only it didn't say which speed the CD-R was.
That's when I downloaded the Nero program JoJo recommended and the fun began. It turns out that my system didn't like that program at all and I had my first BIG freeze in XP...and the blank CD was stuck in the drive. I can't think here of late, so I called HP and they made everything Groovy again. They also told me to avoid Memorex CD-R's like the plague.
I will be writing more hate mail to Memorex, if for no other reason than to irritate them as much as they have irritated me.
Thank you again, everyone.
<just a note> I do not blame JoJo for the Nero program not working, every system is different and mine just didn't like that program. I do not believe that JoJo would ever give bad advice. ;) </note>

I got the wool pulled over one person's eyes, don't I? :D :D

ilona47, I've never used WMP to make a disc. Maybe someone else will come by and help.

Thanks, Jo-Jo...going to the cd media forum listed in earlier thread...got to learn this stuff ! I've only burned 6 cds for data since I had the Sony installed (2-01)...never any audio cds.
:D

Ilona47, you said you used the WMP to make the music tracks, is that right? I dug out the manual on the CD Xtreme and it will use .wma files, which is what the WMP makes. That said, I don't know what your problem might be. I personally wouldn't use the WMP, because .wma files are compressed like MP3's. I'd stick with .wav files all the way, unless you're concerned about HD space or the files are for casual listening.
I always recommend CDex to pull the tracks off a CD. Use the 44100khz at 16 bit setting for a .wav file. Drag and drop or use the Add Track button to get all the tracks you want on a list. If you can, use a rewriteable for a test burn. It'll at least play back on your computer so you can see if it worked.

CDR's
Just thought I would throw in my 2cents worth regarding CDR's. I have been burning now for about 3 years and I use the cheapest CDr's that I can find ; like the ones in the Sunday flyers [Staples,Office max, etc] 50 and100 discs with a rebate netting the cost to abt $10. or less for either. I have had good results with about all brands. Most mistakes have been my own. I have several burners , mostly TDK from 16x-40x. I burn at either 8x or 12x. The slower burns are are more stable and less prone to errors. I am more into MP'3 burns than .wav. A good program for .wav burns is one called Acoustica MP3 Burner. It won't burn to MP3 but will burn MP3 to .wav. A neat part is that it will search for incompletes and alert you whether you want to burn it or remove it. At the moment I am having a bit of difficulty figuring out why some burned classical music [mp3] won't play on my DVD player, but will play on my neighbors... Could use some input onput on that.....;)
