When booting, he should get 2 messages regarding the CD-ROM drivers. The first should be from the driver in the Config.sys file, and it should state whether a drive was detected and the driver loaded sucessfully. The Mscdex line in Autoexec.bat should also report whether a drive was detected, and the drive letter assigned. If you get that far without errors, you should be able to access the CD-ROM drive from DOS.

Haven't heard back from him, must of called it a night. Hope it works. Compaq yuk.....

Still haven't found the right CDROM driver for this puter:
Compaq Presario 4712
Got the autoexec and config sys files loaded on hard drive, hard drive is bootable now - nothing else on it. Haven't found the right one yet: Here is what we tried:
CPQIDEED.SYS
CPQIDECD.SYS (trying it now)
Had them browse the Compaq restore cd, trying to find the files, are they on the CD or the floppy????????
Any other suggestions.

Been reading Vernon response:
When you put the Recovery Floppy and CD in what happens?
-
I would imagine it's much like installing Windows 95. Boot from the floppy, it finds the CD-ROM drive and then launches Setup on the CD.
-
It tells me it cannot read the CD, to reinsert and try again.
-
Ok, see my last email about making a new floppy restore:
Recovery CD there is a file called "qrst5.exe" in the "bootdisk" directory. If you run it, it creates a new boot disk on a blank floppy disk.
-
Just a dumb question - does a compaq restore cd of that age expect to have a fixed drive letter such as M: for the CD (similar to the way HP's installed)?
-
What boot messages are you getting when the 2 parts of the DOS CD-ROM driver load? Any errors? If you get no errors, and the driver load messages indicate success, but you cannot read the CD-ROM in the drive, you may have a CD-ROM drive hardware failure.
If the drive is a generic IDE drive, I have a universal driver that should work. I can e-mail it to you if you want.

jdc2000
I have emailed them bout 6 different boot disks which none have worked.
I suspect the cdrom itself, but they indicate that the cdrom light comes on and it does spin up when a cd is put in they get the error.
Currently there is no O/S on the drive, was trying to get it to work in DOS.
Each time we try a different boot disk they get the same error:
Unable to detect ATAPI IDE CE-ROM drive
I sent them instructions of physically taking the HDD out and hooking to their other computer to load Win 95 on the HDD, then put back in COMPAQ and install Windows from the Hard Drive.
They have an external USB cdrom, but w/no O/S on the HDD can't use that.
DUH Guess I could of suggested taking the cdrom out of the good computer and hook it up to the compaq and see if the bootdisk would load it....oh well..
Maybe send them the driver you have....

When F10 is pressed at boot up is the CDROM showing up in the bios or is the Compaqs harddrive bios also corrupt?
