Does it boot to the A:\> drive with the boot disk????
yes, when I use the boot disk I boot to the A prompt.
The CD drive will not work. G is the drive but when I try to use it it gives me cdr101 error.
Ok, lets try this again.
You boot and get to the A:\> prompt with the boot disk. The screen tells you that it has assigned "G" as your cdrom drive.
You go to G: and get the error.
At the A:\> prompt type the following and tell us what happens: (Hit <enter> after each line)
sys c: (will tell you system files transferred)
C:
cd\windows
win
I typed sys c: (system transferred)
registry files not found, regeitry may be inoperative...........(went by so fast I could not read it all).

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.:)
I cannot find the msdos.sys file on this computer. Microsofts knowledge base keeps referring to it but it is not anywhere. How do I create one or where do I find it?
I was told by Gateway, my computers manufacturer, that you can't just download drivers from your OS CD. I was told to reformatt my drive down to zero's. In other words strip the drive of all data and start with a virgin installation. I presently have two drives. One is my old drive that has corrupted Windows Me drivers. I must be sure not to transfer anything over to the new drive that has to do with WinMe or I will corrupt this OS also. I would just strip it down and clean install! Tough but some times that's the only way to do things!
I cannot reinstall windows on this system. I do not have a working cd rom to put the cd in. That is why I trying to get back to windows so I can try and fix the CDrom.
MSDOS.SYS is a hidden file thats why you cannot see it, to look at it do this:
Get to the A:\> prompt then type the following (Hitting <enter>) after each line.
c:
ATTRIB -h -s -r MSDOS.SYS
Now type
edit msdos.sys
It should come up in a text editor (Blue Screen -probably)
The first several lines should look like this: (be carefull do not mess with all the "X" they are needed.
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).

DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.1998
BootGUI= This enables the automatic graphical startup into Windows. The default is 1 setting this to 0 will boot you to a DOS prompt
BootMulti= Allows booting to previous operation system. The default is 0. Setting this to 1 allows you to press F4 to start your previous version of DOS or F8 to use the startup Menu.
DoubleBuffer= Enables loading of a double-buffering driver for a SCSI controller, if required. The default setting is 0
AutoScan= Allows starting of scandisk the hard disk drive if the computer was improperly shutdown. The default is 1. Setting the value to 0 causes the computer to not scandisk the hard disk drive. Setting the value to 1 prompts the user for scanning the hard disk drive (scan begins if no input for 60 seconds). Setting the value to 2 allows for automatic scanning (no prompt).
If the file is not there let us know, unfortunately you cannot copy one as it is made during setup, however we could make one and see if it works.
when i put in
c:
attrib-h-s-r msdos.sys
I get this error
cdr101: not ready reading drive H
Abort, Retry, Fail?
I did find the msdos.sys by typing edit msdos.sys.
I am totally lost.
I cannot figure out how to edit the registry because when I type regedit I get the cdr101 error. Without the cd drive I can't seem to get anything done.
Thanks for all the help. I hoping it won't be to much long before we figure something out and get this thing going again.
Drive H
Hum,
Maybe this is a compressed drive.
Please do this:
go to the C: and type dir (hit <enter>
Tell us what is there, don't need to list everything but do you see a WINDOWS directory?
now type in D:
then E:
then F:
then G:
then H:
if it goes to one of them then tell us what is there. If H: shows some files tell us.
Quick and easy? Lets put an end to this. If you pur in the QR CD with nothing attached to your computer except a keyboard monitor and mouse (ANYTHING you added to the inside of the computer CDRW 2nd Hard Drive etc has to be removed.) and turn on the system what happens?Quote:

If the quick Restore won't run go to http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_lis...s&fam=Presario click on "Search by Softpaq" and the number you are searching for is 2141
Personal Computer Setup
Description
This SoftPaq creates one diskette that allows a user to upgrade to Version 1.51/C Revision A of Computer SETUP for Compaq Desktops/C, or to restore this utility to the Diagnostics Partition (if that partition has been destroyed). SETUP is pre-installed on the Diagnostics Partition and can be run by pressing F10 when the cursor blinks in the upper-right corner of the screen during power-up or reboot. SETUP can also be executed directly from the diskette created by this SoftPaq.
HOW TO USE:
1. Obtain 1 formatted 1.44 MB diskette.
2. Download the Softpaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to
that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP2141.EXE.
3. From that drive and directory, execute the Softpaq file:
SP2141 [ENTER]
You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskette into a
diskette drive to create the diskette.
4. After the diskettes are created, you may delete the downloaded file
SP2141.EXE if you wish.
5. To use Computer Setup, insert diskette in drive and Power Cycle your computer.
From there you should be able to Quick restore

I get directories in all drives until I get to H:

chkdsk.exe
command.com
debug.exe
edit.com
ext.exe
extract.exe
format.com
help.bat
mscdex.exe
readme.txt
restart.com
scandisk.exe
scandisk.ini
sys.com
Drive H: gives me cdr101 error.
Calpitor,
I can't use quick restore because compaq changed by cd drive for a 4x to a 16x and the system has to be factory exact. I was told that when they changed the drive.
I reinstalled windows 98 (using an external CD Rom Drive). No luck. So I downloaded the windows 98 bootdisk and used it now I am getting messages that 6 system files are corrupted. The computer is a Compaq Presario 4712.
Something we have not asked.
When you reinstalled Windows 98 from the external cdrom was it a compaq version or a restore CD or was it a different copy then what was on it?
If you installed Win 98 over the existing original compaq installtion, then that could be the problem.
If you used the quick restor cd then we will go to Calpitor help.
I used an upgrade version of windows 98. The original compaq quick restore will now work on this system. Compaq made sure of that in '99, when they changed by cd drive.
