I've worked on many 486's and depending on the BIOS version, you may have to disable cache to load Windows 95 on it. Some of the older BIOS were not Y2K-corrected compatable and you can run into the problems your having.
Reboot and hit the DEL key to get into SETUP (CMOS), or watch the screen and it should tell you what key to use to get into it.
Once in there, find the entry under one of the menu items that says something about ANTI-VIRUS, if it is Enabled, Disable it and SAVE & EXIT and try loading Windows again.
If it is Disabled, then find the entry about Internal and External Cache.
Disable External Cache and SAVE & EXIT, re-install. It will take about twice as long to install.
If it installs OK, when done go back and re-enable the Cache.
I would also check the date, at the A:\> prompt type the following:
c:
date
If the current date does not come up, or it is 5-10 years old or in the futher, the BIOS on that machine may not be Y2K and you will have all kinds of problems trying to load Windows 95/
I'm off for the rest of the night, hope this helps.
Here is a trouble shooting page for Protection Errors.

Good advice on the BIOS Anti-virus setting and disabling the caches-- but a really quick fix for the date thing (I guess by W2K you meant Y2K, I don't think a 486 is Windows 2000 compatible) is just to set the RTC in the BIOS to some date in 1995. Win95 will never be the wiser if you never attempt to set the correct date...Quote:

Well im back at it again tonight tried everything you said last post date and time are correct and cannot seem to find anything abt antivirus and the cache external does not seem to be changeble as it says for reference only when i try to do anything to it running AST MT BIO"S 1.09 anymore ideas i just keep getting the pretty blue screen all the time
thx allan
Ummmmmmmmmm, how about Windows 3.11 (or Windows for Workgroups 3.11) and Win32s?
ALARIC You just lost me What do you mean , im thinking probably cannot put win 95 on this stupid thing right???????????
And i do not even know where to ever get win 3.1
thx allan
You might look in your BIOS for an option for "PnP OS", but if you've already removed all the unnecessary hardware (leaving just RAM, a video card, and the hard drive), then this setting should probably be meaningless.
If there's a BIOS upgrade you can download for your motherboard, you might try that-- although it's a bit rare for a 486 to have a flashable BIOS.
Aside from those things, it's possible you have a system that won't be able to take Windows 95.
Really need your help now Alaric went to the ast site and it sent me to ARI Service.com and they have a whole list of bio's flashes for advantage puters and im totally lost could you please look for me at this list and see if anything there to help me again i have an AST ADVANTAGE 486 DX2-66MT RUNNING AST BIOS REL 1.09 I HAVE NO CLUE ABT HOW TO UPGRADE BIO'S BUT THE BIO'S ON THE PUTER HAS AN UPGRADE SECTION AND SAYS U NEED DISK TO DO IT HELP AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELPING ALL THIS TIME ALLAN
There are several close matches for your system listed in this file, but no exact matches. Using the wrong file can render the system unusable.
It's also possible your system has the latest BIOS, as I do find a listing for 516311.EXE Bravo/Advantage! BIOS v.1.09, which could be the BIOS you are already running.
You might try entering the part number of your machine on the System Information page-- it may help locate the specific file you need. Also, the file itself should contain a readme explaining how to properly flash the BIOS. Like ARI Service, I take no responsibility for any adverse effects of flashing your BIOS.
Ok another question ALARIC this puter has both floppy disks and the cdrom could the 5" floppy drive be causing troubles ?? just a thought when i was sitting there getting mad at it
also i found out thru ari by entering my machine # that the caches are controlled by jumpers does this help any external cache says 64/none jumpers 7/8 off 256kb jumpers 7/8 on whatever this means whole bunch of jumpers and switches you could play with if i knew what to do and if needed to do
thx allan
The floppy drive controller uses IRQ6, it's highly unlikely any other device would use that IRQ (it's been reserved for floppies since the original PC.)
A motherboard manual for the jumpers would sure come in handy. Perhaps one can be downloaded from ari-service.com...
Alaric i was just going thru all that stuff trying to find an option that you could use but i don't have a clue abt half of the stuff i was looking at i typed in my p/n of machine and it tells u everything p/n 501421-004 when and if you have time maybe you could look at this list and let me know if anything else we can do with this puter hate to let 1 get the best of us !!! again really appreciate the help will be on again tommorrw nite as it's late here and i have work early will be looking forward to your answer
Thanks Allan
