Sarrkazztic, I added another tutorial to winch's thread. He's got three now to look at. I want to thank you for posting his comment. Balance for all people on a thread is a hard thing to acheive. The best thing is to supply options and be here if they have particular questions on something. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Should have mentioned above, BUT oh well, I have also used usb harddrives for this purpose. They work very good also. And the advantage of the cd is I can leave it. They ain't getting the external HDD without paying. Now, I got to replace the last one I had. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip
that started in my ATX case,
inside my microchip,
I'd just build a computer with,
a new pentium four
and if it didn't work I'd have to go to the store (echo: go to the store)
The temp then started going up,
my comp began to roast,
if not for the thermal paste I'd used that day
my system would be toast (echo: my system would be toast)
But then the fans did do their part,
as I began to smile.
with megahertz,
at my fingertips,
and gigabytes,
by the pile.
Now every day,
I like to play,
though it was obsolete in a while

Just sing it to the tune of Gilligans theme song and feel free to laugh (with me or at me, take your pick; I don't care)
Back to work, I would rather have an Nvidia than anything else. If I were building I'd go for a Geforce2 ($99 at best buy.com) Good price, and impressive capabilities. Of course if the GF3 goes down in price I'll go for that just as easily.

What would be the best model at the best price for someone who doesn't do heavy gaming or big graphic work but still wants a good vid card for DVD's and all 'round performance?

Ridgerunr: You can pick up a Leadtek GeForce2 card for pretty cheap nowadays--anywhere from 50 to 75 buckaroonies.
Even compared to current prices (I'm now officially addicted to pricewatch.com https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) you can pre-order the GeForce3 Ti 200 for around $175. Still a hefty price (of course, then you have the new SB Platinum EAX Audigy etc. etc.) but a steal compared to the $250+ for the current GeF3's. GeF2's are around half that, as bistro stated.
Thought I had found a case at tigerdirect.com last night, plenty of bays and a 350watt PSU. I checked again this morning and it's no longer listed... anyone have something I can pound my head against?
Don't want to get too O/T soooo, gg1, yes, get the 64MB version. Don't want to finish BT and think, "gee, if only he had twice the VRAM..." https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
(lest my eyes deceive me... a "generic" GeF3 Ti 800 video card for $170... too good to be true... must be a typo https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thanks GG1,bistro and all. In my "other" machine i have an ATI 16Mhz at the moment. I'd like to bump it up a' little.
From what i've heard so far, think it will be the GeForce2. Will wait and see what GG1 comes up with and what he pays for it this eve.
Take care all...

Maybe you shouldn't wait on greengoose. You should know he gets his parts from 'Bubba Joe's PCs and Deep-Pit Barbeque".....questionable source.
Did I tell ya'all about the Cheapo Depot we have in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Sarrkazztic and Spragers, Price Watch is a good place to start.
Prices are still going south, I sure misscalled that one, but in my favor. The stocks of many companies and earnings are still going down also. There are now and for a while yet some tremendous deals.
If you plan on building, you could price out your components and find out how much money to put aside and then take 6 months to buy. Why, one reason is the weekly specials each resseller seems to have. Train told me one component I bought was $90.00 cheaper than what he paid a year ago. This is a buyers market. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

"Cheapo Depot?" Sounds like a fun place to browse. There's a place near here called "Crazy Ralph's" but I don't think he carries computer equipment LOL
Still speaking of video cards, just how big of a difference is there between the GeForce3 200 and 500? For example, you can order a GeF3 Ti200 for around $170, or you can order the 500 for about twice that. YIKES!
If only there was one place that had everything, at the lowest prices, and low shipping rates (I'm not going to pay $15 shipping on a $10 network card LOL)
I'm glad you like it. I composed it on the way to the Hershey outlets to get new shoes. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Maybe we could make that the Delta theme song, and make more verses for the graphics, HD, RAM, CD-ROM, sound card, modem and software (which won't be too hard, considering the many disasters which can happen in windows) Or maybe not.
Which is why I wouldn't mind a pentium III, even if it runs at only 800Mhz. A while ago that was state of the art, and I don't mind being a little behind (like six months) the times. Of course now there are very few computers available that run at this speed, except for celerons (I won't touch the Celeron, of course)Quote:

What would you reccomend if I were to build? I have seen many computer guys that won't even touch pentiums in general, and swear by AMD. But Pentium seems to be the sole choice of most PC makers.
