Fans....we don't need no stinking fans. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Just drop that baby into the cooler next to the cold beers and she'll be fine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Question:
My uncle has acquired a couple old computers. There is a logo on them with a small-case letter "e" surrounded by a larger letter "C". Both letters are in dark blue. In "my computer" properties, the thing calls itself Computerease. Anybody know where I can get some info on these critters? My searches only turn up software sites. One is a tower and the other is a flat desktop. They are old...they still have those 5.25 inch floppy drives installed on them. Thanks https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I think that if ya go putting the puter in the cooler with the beers you might end up with some blue screens or hangs....certainly will cause some crashes...unless you are putting micro-brews in there....great taste less filling something like that....
-
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement.
I chose Train for the hand holding with the linksys.... as his pennance for talking over my head! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ He didn't tell me he was tattling at how deep the chasm of ineptitude in Canada was though! lol
As for the html thingy Goose.... you know that was sincerely my pleasure. Phzzz (not a beer bistro https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) is in my opinion, just one of the best and ought to be acknowledged for it.
sarrkazztic...I'm anxious to hear what you find when you crack the case of that computer.....and what you do with it once you do....please keep posting.
Maxx....I too am looking around to see what I can find on your uncle's computer...but I keep running into "computerease" as a software package. Still looking though.

Hope this helps.

Goose,
I hope your parts get there soon. Waiting for your stuff to arrive has forced me to place some orders of my own (might as well use you as an excuse).
As for the networking... I also have no particular preference in terms of brands. The ones mentioned (Linksys, Dlink, Netgear, etc) are all fine. I'm another one who tends to often go with Linksys, but for no real solid reason. If you are just going to network two computers with no plans for expansion then going the two cards and a crossover cable route will be dirt cheap. If you plan on networking more than two systems (now or in the future) consider gettting one of the 10/100 autosensing switch packages (comes with 2 cards and a 5 (or more) port switch (switch is better than hub). They're pretty cheap. Of course if you have or will have cable/dsl then a router is in your future.
Alas, this is future stuff though. First will come BT. Tomorrow will come the world.

Maxx,
The only thing I could dig up is that the website is www.c-ease.com. Unfortunately it seems that site is no longer around.
I'm not sure but I think E-machines bought them out because they had the kind of high tech 5.25 inch floppies that they were looking for. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

DrMDJ,
Thanks for trying. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Emachine wants nothing to do with 5.25 inch floppy drives. They are busy working on their new project...something called 8-track tape. Should be quite the breakthrough. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

So far I have found dust bunnies the size of small farm animals...and clues to the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa inside this computer....oh what is this....the warren commission was a coverup....gee what you can find in someones computer....Seriously I have found 4 different copies of AOL software so far....here is the kicker when I booted the machine for the first time...norton liveupdate comes up and says you have not updated your virus definitions in 497 days do you want to run liveupdate now and they wonder why the machines dont work right
-
Cool! Wait three more days and make it an even 500. Then when you run Live Update on it, Norton will come back with a message: "Did you enjoy your extended vacation in Europe?".

Don't you just love it?! I usually encounter those numbers when I look in friend's last scandisk and defrag! Drives me nuts! My second peeve is trying to explain that critical updates are exactly what they say......kinda/sorta necessary https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ And third is looking down at the systray and seeing it right full.
I do love getting my hands on someone else's machine though!

I have never seen this before....I am trying to format this disk I am going to do a fresh install of win98se for them and it is trying to recover lost allocation unit....then it says "an intenal stack overflow has caused this sessoin to be halted change the stacks setting in your config.sys file and then try again. This happened with a win98 boot disk and also a system disk I made from a dos prompt
-
If you can, not want to lose stuff though, try fdisk wipe partitions and start over.
EDIT: Does not sound to good about the HDD.

i put a network card in it and backed everything up to my hard drive then took the drive out of the machine and put it in mine and formatted it in there then put it back into the machine I am working on then loaded win98se....all is well so far...I will load some more programs for her tonight and then test all day thursday and return it to her on friday **question** when you guys work on a machine for others do you allow yourself an extra day just for testing? I always do. I would rather have it crap out on me than send it back to the customer and have some error show up then. I also do all the required windows updates while I have the machine hooked up to my network not just for speed sake but really to make sure they get done.

Good Morning All,
God willing and the creek don't rise I will start building BT the evening of October 26th. The problems at work have not gotten any better and as a result I have to work this weekend some and the following weekend maybe. All I'm going to say is the upgrade is not compatible with what we do. As a result we are working by hand and workarounds. This situation is intolerable to say the least and time consuming.
DrMDJ, Whatcha ordering? Since I'm your excuse you can tell me.
Daizy, you can go along and feel you're not learning much but in actuality you are. Happened to me also. Told Train I didn't think I was getting anywhere one time and he proved me wrong in my thinking right quick. And when you work with hardware you learn about everything. The people around you know their business and have you noticed how they continually learn new things. It goes on for a lifetime. Great, isn't it? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Well, I guess I'll tie the two computers together the cheap way with cards and a cable for now and then when I build another computer, I'll worry about networking then.
I'll use Linsky's equipment. Seems from our straw pole it is the favorite. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

This is amazing!!! The Master predicted this way back in 1256 PC!!!!
And in the latter parts of a Fall month, a Green One shall rise and buildeth a system like none he had before. He shall sweat beads of labor and stress, but shall come forth rejoicing in his glory, for his system shall truly be speedy and bring him much joy. His countenance shall be changed; his computing shall increase in the land. He shall honk his pride to all when he is done and his old system shall be nothing but a memory.

Goose, what is the likelyhood that you will get cable internet access in the future? Just curious....I see in your parts list that you have ordered a dial up modem.. I tried to look through all the Delta Threads to see what your latest and greatest updated list of components was I either ran out of patience looking or could not find anything after you changed from the intel to the amd could you please post again your parts list. Now that I am not so wrapped up in my own projects I have more time to read up on things.
