Well I was going to post this directly in the forum but I decided to do it here I just installed an iomega atapi zip100 drive in the athlon machine....I had downloaded the latest via drivers last week or so....I did not download that new via zip patch or any of Iomegas drivers.....everything is working fine so far <knock on head> I even played a couple mp3 files that I had copied to the zip disks way back when I had a parallel port zip drive.....I gave it away because it was so slow.....this new internal one is alot faster it played the audio without any hesitation at all just like a cdrom.....can I expect evil things to happen if I do not download that patch or Iomega drivers???? We shall call it another test in the name of computer science.....I really didnt think I would become the guinnea pig....but so far 30 days have not past and I have 2 very nice new computers here in front of me....I have to say I am a very proud owner...already thinking about upgrading the celeron tho...as I said in previous posts...payday may see a 700mhz chip in that board yet....and not too far in the future the 933 piii.......that old slot A athlon 750 is startin to get a little nervous I think....maybe it will overclock itself to keep me from puttin it on the auction blocks... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
sarrkazztic,
It is certainly possible to run the zip using windows default drivers. However, I have just always found it best to load the basic iomega drivers (from iomegaware). Not the "fluff" stuff, just the drivers.
As for the via patches/workarounds... Under certain circumstances (certain boards, settings, etc, etc) they might be needed. Obviously some people are having problems at times. But honestly, I've run in to no issues to date. As such I have yet to go through those contortions listed on the via site for a zip. I just use the 4-in-1s (up to date) with no other manipulations.
I think this is another one of those problems like with the SBLives. I know people have had problems with it, but I have rarely run across the problem, and when I have it has been easily overcome. Just lucky I guess.

sarrkazztic,
I regard to your Ultra66... Since it seems all but worthless otherwise, why not try flashing it with a FastTrak66 bios and see if it works. Maybe that was one of those modified cards I mentioned earlier. If it is you might have yourself a $15 Raid controller.

Ditto to DrMDJ's post. Have the same Zip on my system (VIA chipset)--works better with the Iomega software; however, after installing, go back into msconfig, Startup Cop, whatever-you-use and uncheck all the "extra" 4 or 5 startup files it puts in there. Unnecessary. other than that, no problems at all with ZIP or SB Live!.
Hi folks.
Train, yes, I remember that thread.
matter of fact, I have just put the new information you and the other guys provided in a txt, which will probably make it into "butter booter" and maybe I put a copy in the "what are these partitions for?" thread (where you pointed to).
right now it's kinda all over, and it's just too good info to NOT wanna put it together..

GG1,
I read you consider to get a 30 giga disk for the compaq.
I also read you are not too good in DOS.
two MAJOR tips on DOS
dir shows the content of the folder you are in
(the word comes from directory tree.
a branch is called a folder in windows
you are in the root of the tree is when you are not in a branch.
to get to root of a drive, type
CD\
(that's one without space)
CD means change directory.
you can do
CD windows\command
to have all the present dos utils available
the second tip
one can use /? after a command
example
dir /?
when you do DIR, you do NOT see all the available commands
you only see the available files.
things like COPY, DIR, MD, CD, UNLOCK, are INTERNAL commands.
in the old days (dos6.x) one could get a helpscreen with all the DOS commands by typing HELP.
when I explain a series of commands, I put them in separate lines.
I don't like to waste my time by typing <enter>
I do that only when it's a real newbie, and then I rather not have them do things in DOS.
(when I think there is no other/better way to to it right)
anyway, ther are good sites on the DOS version in win98.
this one is good http://www3.sympatico.ca/rhwatson/dos7/

hi,
the only issue I ever had with zip 100 was when I installed iomegaware tools.
(since I had it together with a scsi card/drives, it played a letter dance and behaved like a scsi even when it is an atapi.)
I never needed the iomega tools, so I never re-installed them.
at the moment, the ZIPdrive is not in use in any machine. (I will not hook it up until I really need it. It's one of the things I wanna have in my hardware arsenal, but on reflection, I never made regular use of it).
the problem seems to be with one specific VIA chipset?

Good Morning All, Seems like I missed a nice evening last night with you all. When I got home last night, had three members of the family with high grade temperatures, one of the commodes was plugged up with paper and water flooded bathroom (4yr old told me she did it and the floor was wet and she was sorry), the compressor went out in a new central AC unit, wife had to work 11 hours, my emails were overflowing, had to make supper and computer needed to be scandisked and defragged, and it all Murf's fault 'cause he installed a full version of Murphy's Law when he became moderator.
Jaak, thanks for the info on DOS.
As Train said, I got a Goody Box from him with BT's operating system and other interesting items to numerous to mention. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Gee, it was good to see you posting QoH. I'm getting closer all the time. This bunch has sure helped us haven't they. It will be a year this month. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

DrMDJ and Sarkazztic, Going to keep going on this Bxxxx (Can't say the word 'cause of Bistro, the Grand Canyon, and my Compaq) thing. I believe it can be done. Of course I've been wrong before. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Just so you all know. My time is at a premium right now with the problems at work and the demands on my time at home. Got a funeral for one of my wife's uncles this Fri. or Sat. Then we'll even out again - I hope.
