Operation Delta - 3 - 008

I dont know what steps I could have tried differently...I tried both installing the card into a preinstalled OS and also installing the OS fresh using the card with a harddrive attached to it....my problem is a little different than yours goose...I can actually see a hard drive attached to my card even in windows but there is a yellow splat in device manager..I can access files on the drive attached to the card...but if I attach a cdrom to the card as well as the hard drive the OS never sees the cdrom drive and the hard drive always shows as using compatability mode drivers....I just got off the phone with Promise Technical Support...they said that the version I bought was an OEM card and the bios cannot be flashed...(this would explain incorrect file in the ptiflash.exe) They also said it was made for a specific machine and I should send it back to the company I bought it from....I may do that....new board comes tomorrow and if it does not work in it I will send it back. I hate the word PROPRIETARY

kallikru, what exactly does that name mean? You are 100 percent correct I found the manual and read it and there is NO OVERCLOCKING at all on this board...good thing I did not buy it just for that reason...I bought it because it was cheap and I wanted a good gaming machine...and it can go up to a p3 933 when the prices fall more. Right now I have the celeron 333 and am going to buy a celeron 700 for 30 dollars or so from a pricewatch vendor...to play with for a while....I was originally going to upgrade my wifes machine but I built it with a SLOT A Athlon cpu 750mhz and I wanted to upgrade to 1ghz slot A but I cannot find those anymore so I decided to buy this new one and eventually get it up to the 933 and that will be my wifes main machine in the future or just for games....We are looking to buy a house and if we get one with more than 1 floor (not all that common here in oregon) I may want to have at least 1 computer on the 2nd floor who knows but the pricing is so cheap now I can afford to have more than 1 machine......I am trying my best not to put too many games on my new machine but maybe I should I built it for me and whatever I choose to use it for right? OK I WILL ADMIT IT I am addicted to building and tweaking....is there a 12 step program for this illness...or is VDR the solution or the cause? I have looked long and hard for a hobby and I guess this is it....If you are remotely good at something and you enjoy doing it and helping others that may be interested in it that is all that matters right? <soap box is open for use now>

On the Compaq I did a F10 and went into the Computer Setup.
The first page is Language. Of course I selected this one.
The 2nd page has columns with words at the head of each one. [Under then word denotes column heading]

you cannot put two different clocked CPU in there and use them in multiprocessing.

I would think you cannot put two CPU in there, period.

matter of fact, for true multiprocessor machines, it is even imperative the stepping of the CPU is compatible.
(stepping numbers refer to the masking the die was etched with... there are stepping models in same speed CPU which are not compatible with one another when used in MPUs machines.)

intel has a listing of compatible steppings for same CPU speeds, if I recall correct.

one other thing about the OS to use with multiple CPU in one machine..
95, ME and 98 don't hack it.
NT can
2000 should (NT kernel)

Even programs need be programmed for MPU or they will STILL make use of only one CPU.

I don't know,
honest, I don't.
(meaning, I never had a MPU )

but, I read stuff about this stuff, and I fear about what will happen when you put two different speed and model CPU in this board.
(I just looked at the link, and this is NOT a MPU board, it only offers support for different "assembly" types.
things like olga/SECC/secc2 (slot) and
FCPGA/ppga (socket)

worst case scenario is that things start to smell funny.
best case, it just don't boot.

Jaak....I confused you a little with my terminology....this is a single processor board but it is compatible with both celerons and p3 cpus....thus the multi processor reference...I know that there were some that would accept the cyrix chips as well as amd k6-2 and k6-3 cpus and the same mobo could run pentium 2 cpus too...so called super socket 7 boards. sorry for the confusion.....

What turned into a longer text was in fact a rather simple answer to your question about being able to run a 700 Cel@750 on the board you linked to.
It may have drowned in my babling (something our friend bistro isn't the only one mastering, although he does a mighty fine job.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ), but the short version of the answer is: No - not likely on that board.

I'm with you all the way on the addiction to building these machines - I get small x-mas candles in my eyes as soon as some of my friends start asking if "it would be possible for me to build a machine for them..". I know then that I have to watch the budget closely when accepting such requests, but that's part of the challenge. These machines are not meant to be tweaked in any way and mainstream components are perfectly acceptable. As long as they work - and they do. And I'll see to it that it stays that way.

Once I start building for my own pleasure it's an entirely different matter. My primary concern is then speed, tweak and quality. I must admit that I'm not married, so I'm not on that tight a budget https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ - I sometimes tend to forget that.

I believe the Maxtor uses the Highpoint drivers (HPT) which either were incompatible with my machine or I was missing some setting somewhere in the BIOS. The Siig card however uses drivers from CMD technologies (CMD PCI-0649 Ultra DMA IDE Controller) and also a bus master from the same folks. Popped it in and it worked right off the bat--go figure. I tried all the tricks in the book to get the Promise (Highpoint) card to work; finally just gave up. On the other hand, bear in mind that Maxtor card may work fine in BT. Wouldn't just toss it. You may consider getting a Siig card for the current machine, see if it works, then if it doesn't just return it for a refund. If you had ordered it off the net, you should expect a refund check in say....oh....about 6 months. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Seriously though, I wouldn't agonize over it (the Maxtor)--not worth the stress. Hang on to it for the new machine, try a Siig in the current machine. If it doesn't work out, well...it didn't work out. Now you can move on to bigger and better things like....modding the case to look like a '57 Chevy convertible.

Thanks for the answer Bistro. I still want to try some more little things just from curiosity I guess. There is no doubt about this computer now. It runs well now from what has been done to it for upgrading.

If this unit can't take a 40 GB, I'll put a 30 in this one and run the two 40s on BT.
