Weekly Subject - 05 - Cases and Power Supplies

WG34: First thing you have to look for of course is a case that has 8 I/O slots. Any reason why you need so many PCI slots on there? While 8 slot cases can be found, most I've seen around have 7. If you plan on filling up that mobo with cards, go for the roomiest case you can find--you'll need a fair amount of air space in there for working/cooling.

Anyhoo, I was bored with my old case, and when it looked like Q_o_H was going for that one, I thought it would help if I got the same one to help her put the system together. It's one of the better engineered ones I had seen in a long time.

I think I'll stay with the S500 case for my first one. I require dependability, stability, and a certain amount of computing power.

the case on my rig is spantastic

only regrets i have is not getting the 400 watt power supply and getting the black case

anyone looking for a new case i strongly reccommend taking a close look at the cases from this company; this one will last a while!!!

Running_on_wheel. The threads vary in length due to the fact that some subjects can be covered more quickly than others. We wanted to keep our flexibility. Therefore there is no set day they start or stop. Our inputs come from many diferent people in a real time setting that has a minimum time frame of 24hours since people from all over the world contribute. For example; a video card thread might take a couple of days wheras a motherboard might take longer than a week.

If it's the first build-your-own and you want to keep things simple, then yes, it would probably be a good idea to do so. Depends on the person really. Others who do a lot of homework on the subject(s) and really get inspired may decide to order their own preference of a power supply and fans to install. Be aware though that you'll pay more for the fancier ps's and fans. Kind of like a car: For the average user, a waterpump is a waterpump--as long as it works. But an auto enthusiast won't settle for less than an Acme Super-Deluxe Niagra Falls HydroElectric model. Same for building computers.

Question...I already know that a standard replacement power supply will not fit in this emachine case and an emachine replacement PS is 3 or 4 times as much money for the same weak unit. I'm not concerned with appearances, so is this plan feasible:

Remove the cover and take out the old PSU. Replace it with a new 300W PS. Since it isn't going to fit...just mount it securely any way I can (straps if necessary) and run the wires where they need to be. It will be ugly as hell, but would it work? The cover would, of course, never be able to be put back. I'm trying to not have to transfer all the guts over to another case. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Back to the question(s) at hand. Perhaps something should be mentioned at this time about modding. I understand that there will be a thread devoted to this subject later, but it should get a mention now. The reason is that if a person plans on cutting holes, painting naked ladies on the side or generally altering the case, now would be time to do it. Before the guts get installed. I don't mean that we should start talking about modifications in this thread, but a mental note to those planning a build that this is the stage where this sort of thing should be done. The details of what and how to do some weird things will get proper coverage later, I'm sure. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

What do you guys think? Should people do these kind of things early in the build or can they wait til later?

Say Maxx,
You can do lots of things with a good drill motor, hole saw, safety wire and duct tape and the covers will still fit. Be sure the either get some screws into the PS and the case for grounding or run a strap between them. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Just a note concerning that InWin S500 case pictured above. If that's one you would consider, don't confuse it with the A500. The A500 was designed with the power supply laying on it's side. The CPU ends up being "underneath" the ps. Difficult to put anything but a standard heatsink/fan on it and even at that rate, there isn't much air space around the CPU. Bad mojo. {So....if you happen to get the A500 by mistake, take an axe to it and chop it up some...it'll still look better than what maxx's e-machine is gonna look like... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/)

In answer to maxx's question concerning modding: Yes, it would be more convenient to cut the holes, paint the case, etc. before building. BUT it really can wait for someone who just wants to build for now. Once they are familiar with how it all fits together and gets a bit more knowledge on the subject, it's not all that difficult mechanically to take everything out to work on the case. Inconvenient perhaps. Legitimate question, maxx, but IMHO it might be better for one to hold off on mods for a while and just build.
Naked ladies???Hmmmm...yes....that gives me an idea....
