Any other practical advice Train, such as anything you can think of that does not require much money?
What about across the big pond. Any particular considerations?

Time to throw in a curve ball here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have a cable modem. There is nothing between the modem and the pole outside the house except wire. All the surge protectors I've seen in the stores (even the pricey ones) don't have a cable jack. Just a phone jack. Is my store behind the times or this an area being overlooked by the industry. In my case the modem is rented, so if it fries, it's AT&T's problem, but I'm still out of a connection for a couple weeks. I can use a protector that accomidates the CAT-5 cable after it leaves the modem, but the modem, itself, is still exposed. What am I missing?

Will do some research for you [read window shopping , gots to get the right name ] and see if I can find that device for you again.
In the mean time, unplug the modem and unhooked the cable from it during storms is the best I can do for now.
GG1 This Item I will post when I get back. It goes back to the radio days an coaxial cables. Know they exist.

MAXX,
There are surge protectors that have cable connections. Usually these are for home entertainment systems, but... They offer some protection. Even a place like Radio Shack has them.

Bookmark your post to make it easier to find.
And remember, please post back whether the problem is resolved or not.

Thought I was tossing a curve ball and you guys whacked it out of the park. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train,
I will use the unplug method until I get a proper protection device.
DrMDJ,
It never occurred to me to look in the home entertainment section of the store. Just made a bee-line for the computer area. Gonna look there and at Radio shack.
One last item...to try and kill many birds with one stone...I was thinking of getting a battery back-up system. I only need the cheap one that gives about 5 minutes of power to do a proper shutdown and save a few documents. Will one of these gizmos have the coaxial cable connector installed? I saw an APC one for about $69.00 awhile back.

maxx: you'd probably have to go to APC (or any company) "Pro" models to get coaxial protection. (And I think "Pro" is Latin for "lots of money").

maxx, maxx, maxx, I have tried to stymie my mentors ever since I met them. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Better just to ask well thought out questions. It's safer. LOLROF
Coaxial surge protectors, hmmmmmmm. Coaxial cable, hmmmmmmm. Wait a minute. It is still used today but the 50s thru 70s military electronics were very heavy on noise suppression and spikes and surges have lots of noise. I'll beeeeee backkkkkk. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Was not able to find a coaxial suppressor like we have for RJ-11. There are grounding blocks, but unless you are familiar with code, best to not trust them.
I would bet a google search using ups will give anyone lots of hits.
Goose
CP&L has had lots of experience with lightning https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ where I seen the lightning damage was in their area. that calls for more research.

For the last 3 years I have been the proud owner of a Tripp-Lite 450 Va UPS. I purchased it after the pathetic condition of the local power lines and major brownouts fried my previous HD, power supply and RAM. I now sit peacefully and watch the power go off for 10 seconds, or the lights dim... no sweat. The modem protection is a definite must in a UPS, a friend had his system fried a couple of times even though he had decent surge protection for his machine. Another got fried by having her powered speakers plugged into a wall socket, even though the computer itself was well protected.
Any peripheral connected to the computer MUST be protected. They're all connected!
PS The UPS cost me just over $200 Canadian back then, but it rapidly paid for itself by letting me work through the frequent power outages and brownouts without losing data or crashing. Oh yeah. This is also where very frequent backups of any working files comes in handy too. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Mes deux sous. Gotta run.

Thanks for all the information on the cable protectors. Looks like the new format for the former operation delta is working out nicely. Good job guys. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Herring, That story gets a persons attention real fast. Thanks for sharing it with us.
When we started the Surge Protection segment of Weekly Subject, I did not really realize the scope of this subject. It isn't even dull and boring. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Protection for all electrical devices is a must. We used to live between two nursery's and due to mini surges we replaced 3 coffee makers, 2 cordless phones, 2 microwaves and had 2 surge protectors go bad due to mini surges. The one I have now has a red light that flashes when there's a surge and it blinks faster than a set of Christmas lights.
Hey Max we use the same weather dude... SbySSE of you...LOL

Something I noticed on a few ads--like "Full protection! Even against lightning!", etc.
Well....maybe. Better to unplug completely.

Good morning All, And thanks Trish-A and Herring for your comments regarding surge protection. Until a person experiences a surge, spike or direct hit then, he/she does not realize, many times, just what can happen to their computer, other electical/electronic appliances, or even their home. It's like you hear about it or read about it but it won't happen to me type of thing.
I have reexamined what I have for protection to see if what I have is adequate or something is missing. My home is well grounded and even the input phone lines are grounded.
Which brings to mind this question. Are there products on the market that do not do what they are supposed to do that we should watch out for that by installing only give us a false sense of security? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
