Hello everybody, just wish to add my two bob's worth to this forum. Being a junior member I have VDR as a favourite for some time now and everytime I'm on the internet I click on VDR and see what is latest forums relate to and visit sites that members suggest to seek further information/downloads. I've tried to get involved by questions/answers but I find that any response that I can make would be of little value. It is dishearting to enter VDR and find questions that are beyond my skills in computers/IT. I'm finding VDR is becoming a "experts" domain and wishing to find the simplest answers to questions like "how to cut and paste" I have to look else where.I just wish that VDR was what it was when I first joined, a site to help everyone, with whatever skills they have, to problems that they need help with. For what's it worth thank you.
Hello Jet486. Its unfortunate that you feel that this site is for experts. There are threads that cater to the advanced users and beginners, all the same. The answers given are simply in return to the question asked. So the more complicated the question, the more complicated the answer.
Having said that, VDr has never been a place to turn down any kind of question, whether its the most complicated, or a simple one like you mentioned. There are no elitists here. We never tell anyone that a question is "too" simple to be answered and we don't tell people to do a search before asking. Thats what makes this forum special and different from other forums.
I, and I am sure that I speak for the mods and admins in this case, suggest that you ask any question, no matter how simple, in the forums, and I guarantee you will be answered in the usual polite VDr way. Because thats what VDr is all about.

Oh yes, I totally agree with Usil. The answers have to suit the questions and we welcome all levels of questions.
If an answer sometimes seems too complicated, it is only because we do not know how much knowledge the questioner has. Just tell us to explain more simply and that will be no problem at all. We won`t lose patience no matter how long it takes to sort out your problem. :)
Just remember that we all started out asking the simplest of questions. It is the only way to learn.
Please do not be afraid to ask anything at all. If you are reluctant at first, I`d be only to happy to help if you sent me a Private Message.
This really is by far the best way to learn, so please ask your questions. :)

usil/Elaine, I could not agree with either of you more. I can understand jet486's feelings because I have been there, done that and am still there on many occasions. I just come back for more and sooner or later I will word my problem in such a way that someone will understand what I am trying to say and the first thing I know; I have my answer. All kidding aside, I identify with jet's comments absolutely. When I first came here I was very hesitant to post...somehow felt that my computer problems were just not "important" enough....too simple. Not like some that needed help fixing "the ARG-234 Non-striped Palocomplex RAM Controller and Pixelator Module in the Windows 98 Registry and Underneath the Motherboard Pre-Conditioning Hydracooler". Heck....I just wanted to know why my fonts looked a little too small. My questions didn't seem "worthy" somehow. Poppycock! We've all been there before and if anyone here doesn't remember those times when they read "simple" questions here, then they not only need a refresher course in humility, but they need to be reminded of what VDr is all about: No question too small; we're here to help. Well hopefully we try to dispell such feelings. The whole point of the place is to help anyone and everyone no matter how large or small the problem.
As far as I know we have never strayed away from our roots here at VDR, we have always had a great bunch of people here willing to answer any & all questions that were posted, as stated above, please do not be afraid to ask anything. BJ

I have to take exception to your description of VDr as a place only for 'experts'.
True, many of the mods and posters are experts in their fields, but IMHO, there is no better site for those , like myself, who are 'tech-challenged', to not only get assistance with the easiest of issues, but to further their learning, and in the most civilized of arenas. The knowledge imparted for free is unending, and the aura here of ....'there are no stupid questions'....along with the 'humor' invoked sometimes...is unparalleled on the WWW.
I hope you stick around and enjoy all that VDr has to offer.

My first time back in a while..but when I first found this forum I was thrilled...that is when I was working on PC's and never a problem this forum didn't help me with.
Now I'm into designing and I'm hoping to find the same support...I love this site and sorry to hear it has been "down in the dumps"...but heads up...things can only get better if you are on the bottom only one way to go and that is up...so let's all be positive about this ...sounds like to me the people behind this forum are willing and able to get it back to top notch...Good luck...

I'd just like to say thanks for the kind comments that have been posted. We always have, and always will, strive to make this the friendliest tech forum on the 'net, and now that folks can find us again things are starting to look up :)
bistro, no offense regarding my reference to gender. So many times I have referred to "he" on some forums and I quickly get a response stating that "I am a she". ( I am trying to be politically correct these days. ;) )
I strongly suspected you to be a he to spout those descriptions that everyone knows the meaning of so well except those less knowledgeable like myself.
EDIT: Think I had better add the fact that the lady folk also know a bunch about computers and can relate their experiences quiet well :D

I have just arrived here today after a seemingly long time away to post a question that I have been wondering about for a few days, but I would like to comment on this subject first if I may.
I was disappointed to read the beginnings of this thread as, through experience, I had come to the conclusion that this site (for me at least) is the raison de être of general IT forums. I have posted on a few - sometimes duplicated across a few for a speedy response to a difficult question. This one always came through with a useful response and usually the quickest also. This is the site I would recommend. Skipping to the end of the thread is much more reasurring though, the fact that the thread is so long indicates that any current issues (I am unaware of them myself) have a healthy and enthusiastic community already taking steps to deal with this.
Without delving too deeply and only offering on initial comments, here is my piece:
I found this site not long ago really when I had novice querys which quickly developed to more complex ones. The fact that this site deals with the latter well kept me here and will I'm sure for the foreseeable future, but what brought me here can't ever fade away for the interest of maintaining a thriving community. To look at this broadly; any valued human commodity can never retain a desirable balance without good management and asset knowledge. I saw references to a poor survey response from such a broad base of users and being a candidate for such reports I would just like to say that when I have been offered participation in a survey I can be put off by the deep, numerous, probing nature of most, even though I feel I want to offer my input as a minimum for valued information I find here. I currently have no internet acces at home and time at work limits me in this respect also.
More input from your users
To circumvent the excuses I myself make for not participating in any long surveys I think a great way to accumulate data from more users would be to advertise key topics of user research questions daily, with perhaps a couple of radio buttons to accept taking just a few seconds. This would net some input from occasional users who would never bother with larger surveys. The latter could be reserved for more frequent users, perhaps based on number posts/logins.
These are the thoughts of a lesser but grateful user.
I'm glad it fills a need. As has been said, this thread is rather old, and even at the time of it's inception, not everyone shared all the complaints listed. Nonetheless we have worked on those complaints as a team and hope to have corrected at least some of the reported issues.

Yeah....5 years is pretty old. It is always better to post your question as a new topic and not tack it on to the end of another thread, even if it is a similar topic...especially one as old as 5 years....that way you can get the specific attention you need. Liam was just helping you out by doing it for you.
Bistro is correct (Unusual eh? :p) I split that post away from an old thread so that it wouldn't get confusing, as someone else created the thread in 2001, and splitting your post into a new thread makes you the author, and makes it easier to reply to for others.:)

I started working in college as a computer operator (and then FORTRAN & BASIC programmer) on just such a machine. Actually, it was a GE 420 or something like that if I remember correctly.
But I think it was more than 5 years ago.

the ads... them ads, and each page we're forced to click on expand to full width... that annoys me more than anything else.
some ads seem to still interfere with typing a message.

I once had ad blocking on for Vdr, for the newletters do bring me here time and again and I still occasionaly participate. But the adblockers are no longer used for they interfered elswhere... and VDr is not a fun experience for I do not like the ad distraction.
At the other hangout, I once said that we should be worried if membercount rose to huge numbers, for that would bring serious trouble.
I really think MOST forae run that risk.
