What "little" program could you simply not do without?

VMware Player, everything I do is done in VMs.

I use Locate32 to search my PC. It is without doubt the fastest and most versatile I've ever used.

A couple of programs I've come to love since the last time I posted in this thread:

Well ill tell ya,REGSEEKER finds more files on my computer than windows search does!! (I am not sure what win search is not showing as it have 'SHOW ALL FILES' enabled)

But I was talking about the Program, "Search Everything"
Not Windows's search which is junk!

Go to https://www.wetransfer.com/ for a free little program that will tranfer your large files in a very fast time frame. It is free but they try to sell you a paid ver. Transfer large files in seconds if not a minute or two. I love it!

Lastpass and Xmarks are the 2 I can't do without; adblock also.

One of my favorites is MomWallpaper, a wallpaper randomizer that let's you set the amount of time each wallpaper is shown, resize, stretch, run randomly or sequentially, and it works with just about any image format. I liked it so much that I bought version 1.1.3 years ago and it works perfectly, but you can download free trial of it.

Another of my favorites is GoldWave. It's another shareware program that gives you a huge amount of options in editing Wav files and you can also use it to record any sound the comes through your sound card at excellent quality.

I'll list one more (although I've got probably a dozen or so I love). The last one is CDex. I believe it is Freeware. You can rip tracks from your audio CDs into Wav or Mp3 format and it even supports CDDB so it can download and automatically list the CD Artist, Song Titles, and more. It supports a ton of audio formats and even lets you convert audio files as well.

Well there, I've listed just a few of the "little" programs I really enjoy and you can even download all of them for yourselves (at least a trial). I'm very eager to hear some of your favorites.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean. Posting a new message is what you did when you clicked on "Post Reply." Now if you want to post a message, unconnected to this thread, you would create a new thread, by clicking on the "New Thread" button at the top of this forum.

Scroll down a bit more and the Quick reply , area should show up.

To start a New Thread:

1. Go to VirtualDr's main Forum page: http://discussions.virtualdr.com

3. Then click the "New Thread" button.

You will now be creating the very first Message within your New Thread.

Before trying to write the script myself (something I know will take me hours to get right), let me ask: is there a “little program” out there that will display a Word or Notepad document (say C:\exercise.doc) on my XP desktop every 30 minutes?

I want exercise.doc to remind me to get up from the chair in front of my pc and do some back strengthening exercises. Obviously, it would have many other uses.

Can't believe this thread is still up after all these years (over 11 now). Anyway, I've got a couple programs to add that I didn't find listed when I searched through the thread.

Notepad++

This is an excellent replacement for plain old Notepad and it has tons of cool features. If you're a programmer or website designer, the program recognizes all the major programming languages and will change the color and indentation of code to be easily read. It even has tabs so you can work back and forth between several documents at once.

7-Zip
http://www.7-zip.org/ Replacement and improvement over Winzip and/or Windows' built-in zipping and unzipping feature. Lets you perform a number of functions, including unzipping files by right-clicking on them and selecting 7-zip from the menu. Works with .zip, .tar, .wim, and it's own .7z files which offer better compression over zipping.

PS3 Media Server
http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/ If you own a PS3 and want to be able to stream all of your media from your computer to your TV, you have to get this program. Takes all the hassle out of it. It works with pretty much any video format, including .MKV files. Available on Windows, Mac and even Linux.

One of my favourite freebies is Convert (http://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows//) I'm frequently surprised how often I use it.

And another that I like is Top OCR (http://topocr.findmysoft.com/) There are probably better OCR programs out there, but this does a pretty good job when I need it. Have to do a little proof-reading, but that is no big deal.

VLC, datapine and speccy are my current favs. :)

Wow. Seriously it have been so many years back.

I'm still using W7 and am a big fan of ATI. I create a new image about every two months. My other favourite is Outlook Express as the e-mail program. No bells or whistles, just what it says on the box.
