oops, then, I'm pretty sure I'm out of luck bc the autorun problem is a couple months old at least and I don't think I have any backups that are that old.
however: do you have any idea what files I'd want to restore, IF I can find a backup old enough? Or would I restore the registry? I have lots of old versions of the registry, though it's probably not a good idea simply to replace a current registry with an old one. But are there particular registry keys I could import into my current registry or something? I have registry backups going back quite awhile from both CC (CrapCleaner) and ERUNT. (Or if it's a non-registry file it's just possible I can find an Acronis-stored version that's old enough.
if not, I got the XP CD from the tech guys, and, realizing that it's SP3, it's maybe not too daunting to do a system repair and then run the Windows updater patches.
I honestly believe that a repair installation is the way to go :).
